TOPIC: When Tokens escape Pucks (From DM guide)

When Tokens escape Pucks (From DM guide) 8 years 4 months ago #1

An issue that several people mentioned to me about combat this year is how different DMs handled the case where tokens leave the puck. Some DMs said that means a miss. Some would go by the location of the token. Some would reset by the location of the puck.

Quoting from the DMs page 8

Escaped Weapon Tokens
Sometimes a player will score a hit, but the token
flies out of the puck. This is typically happens when
pucks collide. When that happens, quickly and
randomly replace the weapon token in the puck then
proceed with the rest of combat.

We may want to make this a question on the DM test.

This happened a lot in 1 if my runs this year (new monk and new ranger, lots of collisions).

Some sort of puck redesign to add a bar that could be rotated allowing a token to go in then rotate over to lock it in might be helpful.

It's especially time consuming when one makes it off the table and needs to be searched for.

We had many tokens fly from the pucks during combat this year (and every year). It's never been a problem, the DM (or a player) just pop the token back into the puck where the puck is sitting, and we move on. I've never had a DM say that a token out of the puck would be a miss, I hope that is a rare event.

I had one DM tell me that the token leaving the slider is an automatic miss. I brought this up to a coordinator and was told the same thing. I would like to see a consistent ruling due to never having any DM, or player, tell me this.

(I was also in that run).

FYI: This issue has been brought to the attention of TPTB.

Also, it was one particular AC who was under this mistaken belief. I talked to two of the other AC's and their understanding was the same as in the DM guide (that you randomly put the token back in).

I'm glad it's already in the DMG. I agree this should be part of the Combat DM quiz next year.

I have an idea... if we only had pucks with magnets that held the tokens in place...

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

I just thought it was an unusual feature of that particular room. When I asked and the DM said the AC told him that's how it worked, I just let it slide. So to speak.

Great idea Kirk. And it would be very inexpensive.

It is a great idea. Just make sure you can still quickly get the token out of the puck when it's time to go. They won't just fall out of a magnet. You might need a small hole in the in the bottom so your finger can push it out when necessary.

Kirk is teasing you a bit - in grind this year some groups had optional access to prototype 3d printed pucks with magnets built in.

Brad did an effective demonstration in the coaching room of borrowing a relic weapon, putting it in the puck, and dropping it from chest height to the concrete floor. The puck stayed put.

The only concern I had with the prototype was that the edges were soft, so I think it would make trying to bump other pucks more difficult.

And the magnetic pucks were noticeably larger.
