TOPIC: Question about weapon swapping

Question about weapon swapping 5 years 1 month ago #1

I was just wondering, with the exception of the bard, how often do people change weapons while playing? I have changed from a ranged to a melee but I have never used more than one melee/ranged in a dungeon.

Because if you had the same weapons the whole time you could be given your puck to carry in the coaching room with you plus to hit and damage written on it. That way the combat dm doesn’t have to look at the card it would all be on the puck and this might allow for that extra combat if needed

I have been known to change from a weighted net to a regular weapon from time to time.

Something that slows down combat resolution is switching context. Looking back and forth from pucks to the card over and over is a pain, even for experienced DMs. It’s why a lot of us don’t. We return the misses, add up the puck damage, add bardsong-x-hits, add card bonuses so we’re only looking at the party card two or three times instead of ten.

In principle I like this idea, but I think the logistics will sink it. You’d need two sets of numbers at a minimum: melee and ranged.

And I expect dry erase would come off very easily just from carrying around the pucks, let alone sliding them, and grease pencils would be messy. It’s hard to wipe that stuff off completely, so they’d look smudged and dirty and pretty ugly pretty quickly.

Then you’d need a runner to clean the used pucks and take stacks of them from epilogue back to the coaches, and any glitch here could send the party into the dungeon unarmed.

I was thinking 4 quadrants on the puck with something like chalk board material so you can use a chalk pen different colors for hit/ dam and ranged /melee.
As for the pucks unless these things are stupid expensive I would think you just have some extras so that the window of getting them from the back to the front isn’t so small

Technology ... specifically rfid .. could aid this and leave the human to run the room, and technology to do the math.

Secure rfids might be expensive from a gaming perspective though.
