TOPIC: New Players Handbook Beta

New Players Handbook Beta 6 years 10 months ago #1

Building on the excellent work done previously by the DDA, we have crafted a new PHB. This is the beta version. Please have a look and let us know about any changes you'd like to see.

Thanks much!

I noted that in the Druid section, the spell counts do not match the character cards listed later in the document.

0-Level Cure Minor: 3 listed in the text. 4 listed on the player card
3rd Level Call Lightning: 1 listed in the text. 2 listed on the player card

It may be a specific design change to lower the number of Druid spells, but the card does not match yet.

I read at the top about the green text for the Sub-Class, but several classes do not specify the Sub-Class in the text. Druid Summoner is described, but not the Dwarven Defender. Might be a bit confusing. It might be nice to at least provide a couple sentences for the sub-class for each character class. Especially for figuring out what the text color matches.

As a side note. With the limited use of sub-classes, is it time to remove them from the game. There is a very limited set of RoSP available. Just seems like a lot of work and expense to maintain them.

I'm not so sure the folks who went through a lot to get their Ro7P token would agree. In fact, I think they'd be rather pissed off.

CON: the RoSP benefit was announced before the full-RoSP was released. Many of us were going to make it regardless, but it did factor in.

Assuming a new benefit is announced, the veterans will split into three camps:
  • Those who are happy, or at least neutral with the change
  • Those who regret making the RoSP
  • Those who regret NOT making it

If there is no replacement power, I’ll be in the second group.

Not saying it’s a bad idea, but good luck getting the first group to 100% without making it overpowered. :)

But before I say another word, I’ll channel #Dreamcrusher - “what a great topic for another thread...”

If a weapon like javelin is thrown in combat, will the puck be returned to be able to use another range weapon?

Yes, the DM will remove the weapon and return the slider. At the end of combat all thrown weapons that are not one time use will be returned to the player.

That’s how many DMs do it.

When I DM, I’ll return it immediately and remind the player they can only use it once. If the player tells me they have multiples, they can slide it again.

But I hate owing things to people, and don’t want to scoop the wrong stuff into the bucket. Like the new +3 Hammer. I do NOT want to be the guy who lost one of those.

You may want to remove the spell counts from the text, and only provide the spell descriptions. The counts are on the player cards, and that would leave just one place to change, should TPTB decide to change the spell counts. Might be easier to maintain, and easier to explain. Just a thought.

Character Class Overview

Instead of having a section just for Rogue, could there a Support section for Bards and Rogues? Bard doesn't really belong with the Spellcasters because they don't have a chart or bead - their check is for Lore. Rogues don't really belong with the DPS classes, they help but they aren't the meat of the damage dealt.

Character Classes in Detail - Rogue

Clarify that without the "of Elvenkind" items the one round setup is literally doing nothing else.

I've been advised by several coaches and ACs that Flank only works if you can reach the character (i.e. melee only). This has come up every time I have tried to flank the Lava Beast in the past. Can that be confirmed and if confirmed, included?

Also it may be a good idea to clarify removing at "any time" should be only while no sliders are in motion.

Other than those concerns, looks great to me!
