Elevator Puzzle 9 years 4 months ago #1

This room seems to have received the least discussion of all the Underdark puzzles. Which I think is interesting for a few reasons.

The comments around this puzzle have been generally positive and indicate that people think that the teamwork needed to solve the puzzle worked well.

I think the more interesting thing about this puzzle is that the solution is literally printed on the wall. However, implementing that solution within a 1 minute time frame is non-trivial. It makes me wonder if more puzzles could be designed this way.

One other thing I wonder about. My group discussed tossing the crystal back and forth, but decided not to try it because one drop would probably doom the attempt. I'd be curious to know if anyone did try tossing the crystal around and if so, how did that work?

We dropped the crystal early on and took damage from it (and also ended our current attempt). So, we mostly considered it too risky to toss it around, though, we did have a couple of tosses of 1 or 2 feet on at least one attempt.

I think this puzzle (which I liked a lot) gets very little discussion because everyone understood it.

It was an excellent first puzzle. I personally like the physical puzzles and this one was very good introduction for new players.

I loved the entire concept of this room and puzzle. Not just for the crystal puzzle but how they pulled off the entire elevator concept. ... I was wondering how the first room would be done and I was impressed.. I loved the look of the walls moving as the elevator went down and then after the puzzle the door opened to a dungeon..Brilliant how they did it.

I had that idea on my run with some new players. I was talked out of it, to quote "We are all nerds do you really think the crystal wouldn't get dropped?"

We ran the crystal.

I thought this room was great. I much preferred it over room 1 of SG. Having to coordinate your party and their actions and work as a team is one thing. And I think the elevator room did it well.

But having to coordinate physically linked actions doesn't work so well when you have a party made of many different physical characteristics and capabilities.

I would have agreed about rm 1 on SG, until I saw that it could be soloed.

We had a 10 year old in our group for sable gauntlet x.x

Elevator was great though, I did the running both times I ventured through the dungeon. I'm just glad we finished fast so i could rest and take a swig of water.

In one of my runs, despite some party members emphasizing that everyone needs to be FAST since there is limited time, it puzzled me to see some players sauntering about taking their sweet time.

Or cases when players aren't paying attention when their number is up. Is it really that hard to focus for a few minutes?

Le sigh....

It's pretty common to have a physical and/or group challenge puzzle as the first room in a dungeon.
2011: The giant "pearl" that had to be placed on pillars using the "squid"
2012: Build a arch
2013: Energy ball drop and hollow tree stump (though the latter was in room 2)
2014: Arrange the power grid and the energy balls in tubes (also in room 2)
2015: Elevator power crystal and spider ball roll/carry
