GC Exclusivity only through 2015? 10 years 1 month ago #1

I thought this relevant in light of recent discussion...

Press release from Gen Con and TD, 10/12/11 (emailed version 10/14/11):

"We are thrilled to announce that we have entered into a four-year agreement between our two companies. True Dungeon will run at Gen Con Indy through 2015!"

This was also when they announced the move to the CC.

Though certainly interesting--I'm glad you found it--I don't see the word "exclusive" in there.

It did say agreement. So that is probably why a limited number of runs at WYC.
Maybe after Gen Con 2015. That will change

I could no longer load the link to the actual press release, but I expect that agreement is guiding WYC thoughts. I also expect that the end of the agreement will prompt other thoughts, perhaps of expanding to other cons?

That's assuming there hasn't been another agreement or extension put in place (albeit without a press release)...

It also makes me wonder where TD is going past 2015. Hopefully it is staying put, but the convention center is getting horribly packed. I'm afraid negotiations for a new contract will be tough.

GenCon has become pretty big, maybe too big.

I don't have any clue as to the distribution of revenue between GenCon and TD, but I can't imagine that around $380,000 in revenue is trivial for GenCon.

Almost certainly not life threatening, but not trivial.

I don't think they get the full ticket price. TD obviously gets some if not most of the ticket price.

Let's hope so. Exclusivity can significantly stifle growth. If the contract is renegotiated, Jeff should attempt to eliminate (or at least, reduce) this clause! Besides, wouldn't opening a True Adventures 2arehouse be good?

From what I understand GENCON has been pretty generous in subsidizing True Dungeon, and in exchange they get that limited exclusivity. I wonder if True Dungeon were to get out of the exclusivity clause, if they would also lose the subsidizing GENCON is doing. It will be interesting to see, it would be great if we had the opportunity to play True Dungeon at more than one event per year. :)

It would be a big risk and IMO likely a big mistake for True Dungeon to leave GenCon. Now I'd love to see True Dungeon in other places but hopefully we can keep it at GenCon too...

Then TD had to pay for the space used, trucks to get all the stuff there, hotel rooms for volunteers, whatever else gencon charges for advertising etc.
I am sure it adds up quick
