TOPIC: Does Mage Armor Stack with Chain?

On Gary's "maxed charcter list" he sets the Bard's max possible armor to 23. He does this by having the Bard wear both Chain mail and Mage Armor. I had never thought about this. The Token guide says Mage armor added +4 to the casters AC. So it should work.

Is this what is intended or do you need to modify the token guide?

(I vote that it is fine, it give a great use for mage armor, which I now regret selling)

Going with the D&D Rules, like bonus do not stack. Mage Armor & Chain are both armor bonuses so, I would bet not. Thus, the name Mage Armor, it is armor FOR mages.

But as Jeff has pointed out several times, we are not playing with strict D&D rules.

Which is why I asked the question. My goal is to get as many question asked before GenCon, so the DMs can be very prepared and very consistant.

Yep, we'll have to wait for an official ruling, however I agree with Mark... IMHO, They shouldn't stack. *shrug*

This comes into play only since the Bard can cast Mage spells...if s/he has to meet the requirements of the Mage...then perhaps s/he can't wear any armor as per that class...Jeff?

Bards can wear up to Chain armor, as I recall.

Bards don't cast spells the same way a Mage does, so armor doesn't affect them the same.

According to D&D rules, anyways, so it may be different for TD. I think they should remain like that, though.

Page 249 of Players HB says it is a bonus to AC...it is a force surrounding the subject of the spell - (to me that subject can have armor on or not)

At the end of the day we need a FAQ response if a Bard in armor can cast this spell and add the full +4 to his/her AC.

Other AC bonuses stack.

Amulet, bracers, armor and shield all stack.

All I know is, the spell Mage Armor in 3.5 D&D specifically notes in its description that it does NOT stack with armor.

But, as I said, TD might rule differently. If so, all the better.
