TOPIC: NPC shops

NPC shops 19 years 7 months ago #1

If we have a choice what is for sale in the blacksmith/magic shoppe at GenCon, what would your thoughts about it be? (I'm not saying we have any say, but, if we did, what would you say about it.) I thought this might be an interesting conversation topic.

I would say all common gear should be there - magic weapons could be there also but at a premium price.

Would you set all the very rares at a premium? What about healing? If the potions of healing are extra expensive, most will just opt for a million potions of minor healing?

If I had to look into my Palantir (a much better device over a crystal ball) I would say that TD will NOT have magic weapons available for sale...it kind of defeats the purpose of buying token bags and trading among players - but I would be happy to be wrong.

If they were for sale - seeing as how the setting is a Grey Hawk one - we could be looking at a dense populated area and weapons of that nature could be available - at a steep price...hard to say.

Healing is a different beast...those potions/scrolls seem to vanish into thin air very quickly no matter the price.

Definately all the commons...

Perhaps a rotating stock of Rares (a very FEW rares) available most of the time...

I'm kind of thinking VR's should only be available via trade, accept for potions/scrolls which might be available as they are recycled after use in the dungeon

Unless the DM's find ways to 'destroy' your VR weapons and reclaim them to put them back into circulation.

(I think this end all discussion on what sort of pixie she is.)

I assume all consumeable will be recycled, common, rare and V Rare.

If they have Rare or V rare weapons, it is very likely that people with large piles of gold will buy them up quickly. (or people who have large piles of stuff that can be turned into large piles of gold).

Hmm....I see your point. What about something to the effect of: you may trade commons for commons, rares for rares, and Vrares for Vrares at some premium for the shop instead of allowing conversion to gold and then buying anything?

What, I'm just reminding them what some of those Mean DM's have said. Forewarned is forearmed. Its a Tavern Wenches job to try to prepare you as best as possible before you go gallivanting off. Geeze, give a little friendly reminder and people think I'm evil.
*looks at table* And you didn't even leave a tip?? Hmm, we see what kind of patron you. ;)

The basic problem is that people that purchased 30 bags will be able to out trade people who bought 3 bags no matter what system is offered.

It is my hope that there will be enough Common stuff in the NPC vendors that it will actually be worth a players time (and money) to buy a bag and trade with vendors.

I was thinking that the store might offer grading pricing scales to make it more fair for the different kinds oif gamers out there. VR might be at double price guide prices. If someone can scrape together 700 gp for a wand of cure light wounds, why shouldn't they be able to purchase one? R might be 150% C might be list.
I believe the player who purchased 30 bags will be looking for very different things than the player who purchased 12 bags than the player who purchased 1-3.
30 bags is a probably a collector who wants to get one of every token. He can max any character he plays. He will be looking to complete his collection with one or two tokens and then massively buy into healing or what he thinks will be valuable, or maybe just hold onto his gold. He will gladly pay double guide if he can't trade for the missing tokens as he has massive amounts of gold anyway. The only common token that he might be interested in is the minor healing and burning hands.
12 bags is the player who will probably like to maximize a single character. Again they will be looking for rares and a few very rares they need for their character. He can probably scrape up enough for one Vrare that he needs to improve his character, but will mainly look at rares.
The casual player with 1-3 or even no bags will be looking to outfit his character. As he's a very busy gamer doing a thousand things at GenCon he doesn't have time to trade outside the game setting. So, with his 36 minutes, he wants to quickly get to business with the NPCs and help himself and his party. All he's interested in is some healing and basic equipment. He more than likely won't be able to use most of his tokens, but other party members will be able to. To not penalize him, common items might be list.

well how I see it is this, lotsa commons not all of them and any V/rares traded in for Gold (like a Mage Armor @ SoCal)

course I ended up with that scroll cuz I lost all my tokens and when the DM brought it out he mixed all the stock (execpt for my +1 Great Axe!!) and Death was kind enough to give it to me as compensation
