TOPIC: Magical vs Non-Magical Missiles?

Magical vs Non-Magical Missiles? 1 month 1 week ago #1

If I shoot at magic-immune monster with a +1 Crossbow, is the monster immune or not?

The crossbow itself is magical due to the +1, but does that mean the default bolts it comes with are too?

The general rule in TD is: when monsters are immune to magic, they are only immune to wholly magical effects. Physical weapons, including weapons that have a +X or some kind of magical effect (e.g., a flaming sword) are fully functional. Thus, in your example the crossbow functions normally. We don't subtract the magical portion of the damage from the physical damage because that would needlessly bog down combat.

On the flip side, if a monster is immune to mundane weapons (i.e., weapons that are not enchanted to at least +1), firing a mundane bolt from a +X crossbow would be effective because a magical projectile-launching weapon conveys its enchantment to the ammo it fires. Magical ammo fired from a mundane launcher would also be effective.

In all these examples, you still need to slide well enough to hit the magic-immune monster's AC.

Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
