TOPIC: Keeping track of Legendaries

Keeping track of Legendaries 10 years 3 months ago #1

Perhaps it may be a bit late for this, but realistically I don't think it is. With the RoSP being numbered and with the unofficial token registry here on the forums I think it would be great if something similar could be done with Legendaries. I don't know how many are out there now (which could be optionally traded in for new ones), how many have been printed, what the cost to Jeff is to print numbered tokens, etc, but given the value of these it would be a nice feature.

I don't have any Legendary weapons yet but I've seen a lot of concern about losing them in the dungeon. It would be nice if there was a registry so you can get a lost or stolen token back to its owner. It would be even better if the (optional) registration was official, even if there was a fee for it. Arguably if a token was lost of stolen the official program could replace it for a nominal fee and there could be a list of missing tokens that coaches could refer to. I suppose it may just be too much work, but if it avoids somebody losing a $2k token...

Sounds good to me.

not likely due to some already being out there and there not really needing to be a reason to check numbers for a normal legendary

the RoSP has a special and very limited effect.

Legendaries do not.

Sadly, there is nothing to stop a person from saying they lost their token, getting it replaced, and then selling one on ebay. You push for proxies being allowed, as some people are using them, or use the fantastic glow tape that helps you find a dropped token.

But if it is reported lost or stolen then it goes on "the list" and anybody who has that number will have to show their GenCon badge or other ID. I guess that puts True Dungeon into the middle of things though... Perhaps they don't take it from the person but simply not allow its use.

So there would be two lists: the registry which isn't used or referenced at GenCon, and the lost list which is. If you choose to list your numbered token on the registry then you can get a replacement token (by mail) if yours is lost or stolen for a fee of say $25. Then your token number goes on the (hopefully short) list so that anybody trying to use that number from now on has to prove it is you.

Unlike the private registration, the short list is public (on the web, in each coaching room, etc). If we see a legendary for sale or trade on eBay or the forums we can see if the number is on the list and, if so, take the appropriate action.

If you sell your legendary then you have to let True Dungeon know, and as a buyer you would want to confirm the registration was transferred to you,

It might sound like a pain, but the first time you lose a Legendary I bet it would be worth it...

Numbering them, especially the ones in circulation may prove a problem. Getting TD involved in the insurance of our tokens seems even more problematic. What stops the thief from just using it in the dungeon? Will all legendaries have to be checked against a master list before equipped?

While an interesting idea, I do not think this is viable.

My biggest concern for both relics and legendaries is related to weapons. If there were a more secure slider system, that would do it for me.

maybe the sliders could be equipped with a magnet..Wouldnt that help secure the tokens in the sliders better?

That is a great idea. I will send Jeff the specifics of the magnets I use.

It seems like a good idea, but the devil is in the many, many details. Setting up a registration system would take time and effort. We couldn't ask TDA to do it for free, so there would have to be some sort of registration fee.

People could use them in the dungeon without getting caught. Coaches barely have time to do what they do. Checking tokens against a registration list eats into that.

And people like their privacy. A lot of folks don't want the world to know what they own. Some wouldn't care. But for a system like this to work, you have to make it mandatory for everyone.

And what if someone makes a mistake? You sell me a legendary but forget to update the registry, and I try to use it at GenCon and end up in a dim backroom threatened with rubber hoses until we chase you down to confirm I'm not a thief after all.

The moment TDA tries to police this sort of thing, they become liable if they, or someone else, makes a mistake.

And lawyers and politicians are notorious for extending their reach. If just one disgruntled person somewhere makes the case that TDA has become an "insurance provider," an industry heavily regulated by every state in the US... just shoot us all.

So - added work and expense without reward for TDA, problems getting compliance from the players, and no reliable way to enforce it. Plus, it opens TDA up to another angle of fraud (Which someone was allegedly trying with counterfeit x5 Treasure Chips this year) and legal issues. TDA would be very kind but very, very foolish to get involved in this.

Anyone concerned about their token collections should contact their home or renters insurance provider about an Inland Marine rider.

this will be better than proxies ...but I suppose if the slider hit the floor (EN/Darkangel) it could still come out. This would probably prevent tokens just flying out of sliders from Bumps
