TOPIC: Beginning Rogue strategies

Beginning Rogue strategies 11 years 9 months ago #1

I'm looking for a way to advance my rogue after the first year of trying out TD. What are done must have items? I currently have master work tools, armor of the smith, boots of elvenkind and a +1 silver short sword. The biggest item is the belt if frost giant strength. It's there typically a path of equipment to focus on?

Unless they bring the T shirt back...
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Well it depends on a couple of things. First are you willing to buy URs or do you want to stick to reds (the red build will be 80% as effective as the UR build but it will only run you about 10% of the cost so I start there if it were me. IMO URs are not worth it until you've exausted all your easy/cheap red upgrades).

Second off how do you value treasure? If the answer is high then your likely going to start by locking in HOP,ROR,COGF and picking up a Libram of Looting an or a Ektdar’s Tinkering Tool.

From there the short version is your going to want to maximize strength damage and saves (IMO in that order). The big difference between the damage output of red and purple rogue is going to be how much you can afford to sacrifice you hit to stack on more damage.

There are a lot of great items at red that boost you damage but very few that add to hit so I would start by stacking as much strength as you can (usually that means gauntlets & belt of ogre power, maybe a wicked charm (your set on the belt since you already have a better one)). If want to spend UR money then you should look at the largest giant strength belt you can manage, a rod segment 5, necklace of the oak, and this years volunteer ioun stones.

Since your stacking the heck out of strength for melee hit any damage anyway your likely going to want a mighty weapon for ranged (+1 mighty short bow or the much more economical mighty sling are great here). If you can swing it the sneak attack goggles also rock since theirs normally at least one ranged combat per dungeon, you wont get all your bonus damage but with a mighty weapon your ranged sneak attack will still sting.

After that you start focusing on damage anywhere else you can get it (brawlers mug, bracers of fire, ring of frost, etc(these are the items Id start with since their relatively cheap))

Finally your saves, on my budget builds I normally use a ring of fort/will saves then just stack as many of the highest plus to all saves items as I can.

Here are some items I'd strongly consider for a rogue build and some budget alternatives (in cases where they stack I'd try and use both)

<Table boarder=1>
<TR><TD>Slot</TD> <TD>UR</TD> <TD>Rare</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Weapon</TD> <TD>Nightshades +2 Short sword</TD> <TD>+1 ShortSword</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Off hand</TD> <TD>Orb of Might</TD> <TD>Brawlers Mug</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Armor</TD> <TD>Mithral Chainmail</TD> <TD>Chainmail of the Vale</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Weapon</TD> <TD>+1 Mighty Shortbow</TD> <TD>Mighty Sling</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Boots</TD> <TD>Boots of the Underdark</TD> <TD>Boots of Elvenkind</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Weapon</TD> <TD>Mithral Gauntlets</TD> <TD>Gauntlets of Ogre Power</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Helm</TD> <TD>Crown of Might or Mithral Cap</TD> <TD>Hat of escape</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Belt</TD> <TD>Girdle of Might</TD> <TD>Belt of Ogre Power</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Bracers</TD> <TD>Mithral Bracers</TD> <TD>Bracers of Fire</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>cloak</TD> <TD>Cloak of Destiny</TD> <TD>+2 Cloak of Resistance</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Neck</TD> <TD>Necklace of the Oak</TD> <TD>Amulet of the Wind</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Ear</TD> <TD>...</TD> <TD>Earcuff of the Wind</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Ring</TD> <TD>Ring of Frost</TD> <TD>Ring of Protection</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>Charm</TD> <TD>Draco-Lich Claw Charm</TD> <TD>Wicked Charm</TD></TR>
<TR><TD>ioun</TD> <TD>Ioun Stone Topaz Trilliant</TD> <TD>Ioun Stone Beryl Prism</TD></TR>
</table>

From the sound of things we may also be getting some new rogue items this year though so I would lock in on any big purchases until the new items are posted (except for possibly Topaz Trilliant & maybe a charm of synergy (if you run with a synergy group) since they are going to roll out soon).

Also give some consideration to how you your going to level up, if your using URs you likely have 2 might items already (orb and crown since their kind of uncontested) so the girdle of might becomes a good choice (again this might not be the right way to go for you since you have the frost giant belt).

If I was going to buy just one UR for a rogue (after I had all of the other reds) I'd try and get my hands on nightshade short sword first. It can be had for fairly close to the cost of a current UR so its still fairly economical as URs go and its likely your best initial boost into UR territory since in addition to the +1/+1 you could also get by stepping you your strength by a level it has the burst dot that makes sneak attack even more deadly.

I bought my libram of looting for just that eventuality XD
