TOPIC: New Token Mat < Feedback Needed, Please

New Token Mat < Feedback Needed, Please 11 years 10 months ago #1

To go along with our increased focus on more player fun during the event start process, we are going to have a TWO sided player token mat this year. On one side will be a design much like last year's design -- albeit with some of the text in the circles removed.

On the other side (which will be turned up when the players enter the room), will be a more PC-RPG type of image. We are all familiar with the character inventory/equip screen from our favorite computer RPGs -- and I want to allow our players a chance to recall that fun with the new token mat.

The below image is just a prototype I whipped up today to illustrate how the mat would work. I worked with Druegar and Will Walker (Coach Coordinators) to develop what you see below. Please let me know what you think of the general idea, as well as any adjustments you would like to see. Thanks a bunch!

Jeff,
Have you considered a trifold that "expands" to the right and left - with additional slots for specials, charms, ioun stones, etc?

Also making it tri-fold keeps it simple like you have - or expandable for the more advanced players?

Looks great and makes a LOT more sense to me offhand.

Thanks much!!
-Fizz

EDIT: The tri fold would come from behind - sort of like a reversed version of a Chinese Carry Out menu.

As a player who until recently did not have a large token collection, I would have found that very user friendly. I think it will far less intimidating and much more usable for new players.

Now my first thought is, I'm gonna have to flip that over. ;)

Do you think fold out tabs (from the back) with more spaces for Tokens (in approximate corresponding areas) would help you out? That's where I was going with the "Tri fold" idea...

100% agree with your statment about less intimidating for new players. As a visual person I really like this new design!

I like it. It's actually very similar to something I made up myself to teach new players we had in our group last year how to equip tokens. One thing I found a little confusing when I first starting playing was learning what all of the slots were. A visual display like this is very helpful for teaching that.

Here's the one I made in case anyone is curious:

Jeff, I really like the concept. I'd possibly move some of the tokens around (like I'd expect Ioun Stones above the head), but it looks like a much less intimidating setup for newer players.

Is it going to be hard for coaches to read that upside down and figure out what slots all of those tokens go to?

I wonder if the point was to keep it simple for players with few tokens and easy for coaches as well. Perhaps the thought was that more tokens would require the other side to keep calculations manageable.

From a players perspective I much prefer the graphical layout

I like where this is going should make it less intimidating for newbies. Also really like Adeyas layout with the smaller character graphic connected to the token circles (just looks cleaner). Whatever layout is selected any chance the character equipper program could be tweaked to print out playmate/stats in a similar layout and as long as I'm asking for stuff what about a QR code reader link near the English one.

This set up will be a lot easier for new players to handle. As a previous player coach, I think this would work out fine.

Maybe you could also have some of the old style ones around, for when there are more token heavy players?
