TOPIC: True Dungeon Item Recreations

True Dungeon Item Recreations 13 years 4 months ago #1

Hey everyone!

I'm a leatherworker who was clued into True Dungeon by Mr. Landspeeder_95 when he asked me to fabricate up some codex/spellbook props for him to keep his Tokens in. The commission was a lot of fun, and this Gencon I talked the ear off a number of this community about what they would like to see in the future.

I work in leather and steel, and love building props and costume pieces. What felt like the most obvious thing for me to do to help make the True Dungeon experience even more immersive for the players was to recreate the tokens in actual props. My idea is that I would create body slotted props, that would in turn have a slot or pocket that would visibly display the item they represented. So if you had a Holy Symbol of Pelor, my prop would be hardened leather amulet that you would wear around your neck, and in the center or back of the symbol would be a clear plastic window that would show the face of the token held in the pocket. The same can be done for Bracers of Archery, or a Belt of Giant Strength, where I would do tooling and applique work to highlight and show off the actual token held inside the prop.

I am very interested in exploring this, and would love some feedback from the community on the subject. I will also be working on more mundane things, like smaller token books and wallets, but those don't have me quite as excited as building armor pieces or signature equipment for you guys.

Let me know what you think!

Thank you! I am definitely working hard to get even better. It's Chris' fault I even started doing tooling work.

I would be interested in a bracer that had slots for weapons. Having something that provided easy access to and secure storage for ranged and melee weapons would be nice. If you have a link to pics of your work, that would be great.

I bought s set of the thieves tools at Gen Con and it is GREAT!!!! The only thing that would make it better is if you could make a slot in it to show the masterwork thieves tools. Also I might have some leather work I need done. I will pm you about that.

I would definitely be interesting in this, with a slight adjustment. You see, if I had any metal working skills, I was planning to make a pair of aluminum bracers, each one with five or six secure token slots, so I could have the most common display tokens (revenge damage, special protections, etc.) on hand (or wrist, as it were) to show the DM. And just to wear around the Con in general. Something where the tokens could not be removed easily, but were readily visible.

If you could make something like, I would be extremely interested.

Ian Ferguson - That is definitely what I'm thinking of working with. I also have plans for a "spell component"/batman-utility belt. It would be a ring belt or kidney belt with many built in pockets for 3 or so tokens each. Think of a munitions belt. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of these items yet as I haven't even started creating them, however I do have a series of Burning Man utility belts I will be finishing for clients this week and should have plenty of examples soon. You can check out either link in my signature for shots of my work. I will be updating with more as I find the time between commissions to actually take photos of my inventory.

Twolf1322 - Thank you so much for the support! I was unaware that TD had tokens for masterwork tools, and it would be a brilliant idea. PM Returned!

Xavon - Making the leather props such that the enclosed tokens are visible is my number one priority with this project. As far as transitioning to metal pieces, my shop has full access to hot and cold metal working facilities, including machining, foundry, and jewelry. I do not currently possess the specific skills to create metal props on this scale, but I can definitely ask around amongst the people I know who do. Thank you for the idea!

Thank you guys for the interest and ideas. I'm not going to be able to pull this off without the support and inside knowledge the community can offer me.

I don't necessarily need/want metal, I was just thinking that would be the easiest from me to acquire and work with personally. Leather would look better anyway.

I saw (and touched) Landspeeder's and it was beautiful and quite sturdy. This case would avert most token catastrophes and allow easy access to everything in it. And, again, it was marvelous and beautiful.

Could anyone give me a rundown of the most useful belt and bracer items are? I'm trying to work with the True Dungeon guys to figure out what I should be putting together as test pieces.
