They finished just under 18k and someone backed at the Relic level. Trent? Laz? Either of you dip your toe in here?

I suppose I would want to see how well pets end up comparing to regular attacks, since it seems everyone can get a second attack if they choose (unless I misread some rules in there).

Could be - but I'd say the class that gets to triple dip on AC, RFLX, and Damage by improving one stat and also gets 1 more action a round than everyone else is a good front-runner for 'likely to be busted.'

I'm sure they'll improve things as they go - Rome wasn't built in a day...

Also, I think everyone can play ranger if they want, so that's OK too.

It does look like they tried to account for this in that weapons and armor have more requirements and limitations than we see in TD. For an example: the best armor your ranger can get with their medium armor proficiency is chainmail (18AC). They need at least a +3 STR bonus to use it and even then their maximum DEX bonus is +2, which not only limits how much your DEX can add to your AC but also how much it adds to ranged attacks and reflex saves. So, from a balance perspective, TD went with super streamlined and simplified rules, leaving themselves less wiggle room for balance while RPEX went for more more balance room, but also much more bloated amounts of rules crunching.

As far as the leveling system goes- I think I understand how it works? At least, I think I am on the same page as what they intend it to be. I will agree that it definitely is weird, especially in some of the way it is phrased. At the very least, I would say that it doesn't sound like you are "locked" into a character at level 8. Rather, it sounds like all your characters share experience each adventure until level 8, at which point only the level 8 character you're playing gains XP in that adventure. So, it might be intended to work out like this: your characters Beld the Bard and Gorlag the Barbarian are both level7 with 2700 XP. You play as Gorlag and gain 100 XP. Both Beld and Gorlag share that XP and are now both level 8 at 2800 total XP. You play Gorlag again and gain another 100 XP. Gorlag is at 2900 XP while Beld gains nothing and remains at 2700 XP, since level 8 characters do not share XP any more (alternatively, I could be way off base with how XP is intended to work).

Matthew Hayward wrote: Also - it's good to see Rangers are way OP in this system as well:

DEX adds to AC and ranged damage, rangers get 2 ranged attacks per round if they do nothing else, and rangers get a companion animal that they also control, so that's 2 attacks and 1 additional standard action per round for rangers :).

These are not automatic abilities every ranger gets, its done through talent tree options and it is not possible for a Ranger to get both the 3rd tier pet and the 2nd attack, they have to pick one or the other. If they take the 2nd attack at best they get a tier 2 pet which is much less powerful.

Fighters also have the option for a 2nd attack, and Wizards can get a Pet familiar. So both abilities are duplicated to other classes and for Rangers its basically one or the other. Players have to actually make choices in how they build their characters.

The problem with this entire discussion is that what I was told at Game Hole Con and from emails since then these rules are from the playtest and they are in the process of updating them, this includes the talent trees. So its likely we are discussing something which is already not accurate.

Nah, I thought about it very briefly. And of course if I did it I'd want one of everything...hehe.

Maybe I'll try this one day, but right now I'm too busy and in love with TD!

Yeah, I was assuming of we saw Trent join, it would be at the "we shower you with pins" level ;)

It does seem bonkers, right up until I notice that Healer Kits don't get used up so anyone who is proficient with them can do the same thing. XD

I don't think details like that have ever stopped this community before (see the discussion about level10 benefits)!

Though more seriously, it is a decent discussion to have if it ends up being the starting point for asking RPEX more pointed questions about rules clarifications and mechanics- which can factor in as they transition out of playtesting and write new versions of the rules.

LOL. I read all those comments but didn't pay attention to who made them...lol. I was like No charm is a slot not a level, who is that guy.

I do wonder what number of the 26 backers are TD players as well.

I was tempted to join, but given my collector nature I didn't want another temptation. Plus, I'm not sure my group would be interested in another game. Maybe a few friends and I will try it out this year, if it fits in our schedule.
