My preference has always been Embassy Suites, where you get a two room suite, free buffet breakfast, and free snacks/drinks in the evening, plus a bunch of tables in the lobby where you can do open gaming. But I know others like the closer hotels.

Sunday, February 12 at 7:42 PM Eastern I did put in my volunteer request so hopefully I get accepted otherwise I will have to get my badge refunded. No rooms for me by that late.

I'm not holding my breath on a DT room with that time. Betting as I am, if you didn't get something before 4:00, have a back-up plan ready before logging in. I'll make up a alt list of hotels further out tomorrow for our group.

Might actually work out better as I'm not sure who all will make it this year, I have 2 highly likely, 1 maybe and 1 thinking about it.. Knowing my friends, its more "2 kinda sure and 2 not going." So if I end up going alone, further out will be cheaper.


Will say, number of people throwing fits and pouting about their times are getting tiresome.

Are you talking about people throwing fits on these forums? Everyone seems to be handling it in a pretty mature manner so far from what I've seen.

As long as there is more demand than supply there will be some people upset. That'll never change regardless of what system they use. People who get what they want love the system and people who don't will insist it was unfair.

Honestly, this is about the best way they can come up with to keep Gen Con affordable. If they got tired of the complaints and hassle, they could just let the free market decide. In that case everyone would rush to reserve their room a year in advance and you'd see rooms going for $700-$800 a night and people would pay it and then still complain.

The point is..that it isn't "fair" at all. You are forced to buy a badge to a convention where you don't even know if you'll have a place to stay. If the hotels would start letting you pre book during the year before as they used to, this wouldn't be such a problem...but they are closing that gap between 'open booking' and the houseing portal more and more every year.

My argument is that perhaps the people that bought their badges first should be in the "first" hotel group, then second group should be in the "second" group, etc, etc. THAT's fair. I could live with that. But being arbitrarily thrown into one of the last groups when I did everything right is not.

This is just another mess and probably will be my last Gencon.

When you have a randomized time, you still expect to have a chance. When you get 9:29 p.m., it makes me wonder why I bothered to pre-register at all because that is no chance.

This system does not work. I have reasons for needing (note: not WANTING) a downtown hotel, and if I'm forced out by the airport, then I realistically have to reconsider going due to the logistics involved in bringing a family member. AND, at a 9:29 p.m. time, I doubt even ADA rooms will still be available.

I now have to seriously consider volunteering in order to secure a downtown hotel, which is something I did not want to do this year.

Thanks GenCon, you run this show like the government, and that's not a compliment.

Just bugs me. It's really nothing more then unless it's in my favor, it's unfair. There is no way that satisfies everyone. Just make it more level for everyone.

I guess I didn't read all the posts.

I do understand why people who can't get downtown rooms are unhappy, but it is a fact that there aren't enough downtown rooms for everyone, and no matter what system GENCON uses, not everyone will get a downtown room.

Just going to throw this out there. If anyone does wind up with a room downtown that they don't need send me a PM and let's chat......
