On the plus side, it solves the "I live closer to the server" advantage.

If that is actually what happens that would be great. Whether it is or not is pure speculation though, correct?

I don't think it's actually randomized.

From the Gen Con newsletter (emphasis mine)

Many events are in high demand, and by submitting your Wish List at noon (Eastern) on Sunday, May 28, you will improve your chances at getting into these events. Building your first Wish List? Need tips on event search? Check out the "How to Find Events Page." The "Find Event" functionality supports key word search, searching by company/gaming group, and searching by time/day. When searching, use quotation marks to hone in on your search terms, including key words and phrases. Searching for multiple terms without quotes will return any event related to your search terms. If you know your chosen event's Game ID, you also may search with that.
You can add, remove, and reorder events on your Wish List. The timer on your "My Wish List" page will provide a clear second-by-second countdown to the opening of Event Registration.
When Event Registration opens at noon (Eastern) on May 28, the "Submit Wish List" link will activate on your "My Wish List" page. Click the button, and submit your Wish List. You then will get assigned a queue number. Wish Lists in the queue will process in the order in which they are received. Refreshing your browser window will not affect your queue order, however, frequent refreshing may slow down the processing time of Wish Lists. After your order is processed, please complete your transaction and go to your cart to check out. Carts will time out after two hours, so please remember to complete your transactions.

I like the system much better this way than the way the Hotels were run this year. Even though more than half of the time the system crashes on me. I like feeling like I have some control over the outcome. :)

I think we can all agree it's much better than the origins system

And I would much rather have the hotel system.
Eight people sign up for events, only 3 had to actually be at their computer.

Here, since you can buy all 10, only 1 person had to be there.

Imo, a much cleaner system.

I think everyone is expecting to clear the "better than origins" bar by a large margin.

True Dungeon doesn't manage Gen Con's event registration system.

If you have feedback you should take it to the Gen Con forums.

Everything that you are likely to discuss or proposed has likely been discussed or proposed at length every year in those forums.

For the record, I'd prefer a serpentine 1 event at a time allocation between all people who submit wishlists prior to noon, or whatever.

At the end of the day, just like with housing:

* Not everyone will get what they want
* Not everyone will agree on what was the fairest / best way to allocate scarce resources

So Gen Con really has very little incentive to make changes - they won't be able to please everyone and it takes their time and money to switch stuff around.
