Fish are funded... Let's gift an ALPACA! 6 years 11 months ago #26

Another generous bid that puts us just a few $ short of our next animal gift for Heifer Intl...

One of the most mellow mammals in the Andes...the ALPACA!

Did you know:

1. Alpacas have flame and water resistant fleece. These qualities combined with alpaca fiber’s lush texture make it extremely valuable and highly sought after by knitters worldwide.

2. Alpaca fiber is naturally hypoallergenic. Unlike sheep wool, alpaca fiber doesn’t contain lanolin (which is a common allergen).

3. Alpacas offer so much to farmers in the high Andes. Their hooves are especially suited for the terrain of the area. They thrive between 14,000 and 16,000 feet, making them perfect for the campesinas that live in the remote Andean regions where families can be isolated and struggle with access to markets, clinics, etc.

4. Alpacas live a long time and are easily domesticated. They give birth and shed their fur every year, making them excellent for sustainable projects that stand the test of time. Their stomachs are great for this area because they absorb 50% more nutrients than sheep and goats—allowing them to survive where there is only poor quality grass.

5. Alpacas also provide nutritious milk that can be made into cheese and sold. They also provide natural fertilizer for local crops and pasture further boosting yields without expensive chemicals.

Heifer doesn’t just stop with providing the animal. They teach farmers to process the fur, color it using natural dyes, store it properly, turn it into beautiful artisan products and market it. Covering the entire value chain, from the herd to the storefront.

Recipients of an alpaca gift from Heifer International agree to pass on the first-born female, or “cria” (baby alpaca) and train the new owners in its care, pulling another family out of poverty.

To cover the last few bucks we need let's offer:

1 x steel, plank, hide, stone and a Charm of Health (2016 back) for your $15 donation (shipped).

The next 5 4 3 2 1 PM can get one and help me close another critter from our list.
