TOPIC: Need Your Token Ideas for 2008!

Ummm. How is it picking for strategy if you never have the item in question to pick from?

By collecting for a few years of course. You may not have that particular red from five years back, but it doesn't matter that much because you have lots of other options for that slot.

Which still dosen't allow you to pick for strategy because the item that qualifies for a particular strategy is missing.

I expect most people are not as limited as you henwy. Most people would not need every token in existence to create a stategy.

PS never try playing Magic the Gathering

Given the problems with the Horn of Plenty, I think I'll revise the Ring of More as follows:

Ring of More: Four Charges, for each charge, draw two additional treasure tokens, stacks with Horn of Plenty. Rarity: Rare.

I like the Potion of Plenty idea also: Potion of Plenty, Uncommon, Draw two extra Treasure Tokens.

Anyone else other than me who'd love to see some more nostalgia items? Frost Brand or Longtooth or even Mr Vorpal. Though I guess the last would have to be neutered in some major way. Vorpol toothpick! A damage ring with 12 numbers all of which are 0 with 1 decap.

Might not be a bad idea to just dodge the entire draw more treasure bullet. The real problem is like the Special. People will tend to hoard until something good comes around and then blow them all at once. Jeff has already said the distribution for treasure boxes will be skewed higher next year. That should be good enough for improving draws in general.

Sidenote, I'd like to see TD start to nuke items that don't end up having any functional use. I guess most of those are in the realm of the commons so most people don't care all that much about it. Things like hammer and spikes and the like are just sorta flotsom. Gear is spiffy and cool but not unless it serves some real purpose. We should come up with some token guide rules for how each item is functional rather than having people improv and then watch DMs improv results.

How about Caltrops? That's a 'gear' item that could be useful and has a set purpose. If spread about during the missile weapon round, the monster takes damage as it closes for combat. Or it can stay at missile range (if it has missile attacks) and the party has to take damage if it wants to close to melee. Nothing big. A couple points would do.
If you keep just upping the power, then having a Save DC of 12 for anything is ridiculous.
You already had some people complaining that hardcore was a cake walk. Do you really want to add to that?

I am all for limiting power creep, I understand the implications of it, but limiting it to +3 at UR (and never going over that, or reprinting it for many years) isn't going to break the TD.

The idea of the TD is to have fun, while being challenged. If you have fun by destroying the entire dungeon without a scratch on you, spend $2K-$3K and gear yourself out. If the challenge is what excites you, go nude, if you know what I mean :P If the people who went through hardcore by gearing out thier party so everyone had >24AC, >12 on all saves, and purple weapons, and they didn't have fun, well that is thier fault isn't it? Maybe next year Hardcore will be harder, and only 10% will survive, and everyone will be upset over that (except for the few people who LIKE getting destroyed by the dungeon). All I have to say is if that happens, no prep GMs should try to coerce me and my group into running hardcore like this past year. /rant

I was thinking about that, but the odd thing is, a vorpal dagger is actually more powerful than a vorpal sword if it uses the NSSS mechanic. A dagger only has 4 numbers on the wheel and if one is the dagger/sword symbol needed for a decap, then it's a 1/4 chance whenever you crit. You would only have a 1/8 chance on a sword.

Actually, that's pretty much what I mean... =)
If you keep adding items that will max out a party, then the dungeon needs to get harder. But then those who aren't maxed out are going to get obliterated.
If you don't make the dungeon harder, then the uber parties will think stuff isn't difficult enough and don't have much fun. But they don't want to not use the stuff they spent so much $ on. But the 'lite' players still get a decent chance to survive.

I think they're still trying to find the balance point of TD so that the biggest number of people can enjoy the event. If you change too many variables at one time, it makes that balance point so much harder to find.
Upping power is not inherently bad. But don't hurry it. That's all.

Excellent point. But a Vorpal Longsword would be the sort of weapon which didn't have any disadvantage (no lower damage wheel) and wouldn't be a tough choice to make, either.

Maybe a Vorpal Shortsword?

Or, you could list the damage wheel twice on a dagger (or even the shortsword)...

Oooh - excellent way around it. That would make it something like 1-1-2-2-3-3-4-* right?

Exactly what I was thinking.

And how funny would that be? One round, you just ding the guy for 1hp (well, plus whatever bonus you have) and then the very next round, you cut off his head. Ha! Take that you mean old baddie!
