TOPIC: Need Your Token Ideas for 2008!

Re: Matching Tokens to Storyline 16 years 7 months ago #133
Okay folks...I e-mailed to Jeff and I'm hoping to get his input before I go work more on the token list I want to submit.

However, I'd also like YOUR input, as I'm sure Jeff would as well.

We've had plenty of remarks about shaking up the token list, discontinuing some Rares, having large turnover of tokens (or not), and power creep. I have an idea that might help with some or all of that AND tie in to the storyline for 2008 (and 2009...the rebuild after the war...).

Basic premis: Greyhawk is at war. Resources are limited. Even a long sword becomes highly valuable.

Example In-game effects:
- Plate mail can only be found in the dungeon, it's no longer available via token purchases or the Free Bag.
- Longsword becomes a Rare, along with several others.
- Elven Chainmail? Yeah; right. This item is retired as it cannot be found during a siege.

You get the drift. Several items that were Rares or Uncommons are either no longer available or are available only as treasure within the dungeon.
Many other items are moved from Common or Uncommon status to Rares.
This wouldn't affect everything, but would affect the weapons and armor the most. Possibly a shake-up of the Wondrous items as well.

Of course, we'd come out with a bunch of new stuff, but we'd try to keep the powers within check and within reason with the module scenario of a siege.
Trying to match the tokens to the storyline.

What do you think?

Rare long swords? Wow, I'll be rich. I currently have enough of them to supply a small army.
Insolent fool, why are you not yet kneeling?!?!

Re: Proposing New Rarity Scale 16 years 7 months ago #134
I started on this a day or two ago, just about the time Jeff posted his note.

I am suggesting we add 1-2 more rarities.

(I don't care what color - just listing one)

Color Rarity Name Ratio
Green Common 7/10
Brown Uncommon 2/10
Red Rare 1/10
Orange Very Rare 1/100 or 1/250
Purple Ultra Rare 1/1000
Gold Unique 1/2500 or 1/5000
Dungeon Only Not available in Purchased tokens or Free Bags; only found in the dungeon
Combo

What do you think?

examples to follow in a bit, once I figure out the formatting....

I absolutely love Dungeon-only items, and I hope it expands in the future so that there are many more dungeon-only items. That would really enhance the pleasure of getting Dungeon Treasure, instead of mostly getting commons and uncommons you've already got plenty of.

I'm not sure about the rarities higher than 1/100. It might be very frustrating for players trying to complete sets, and if you made the items powerful enough to justify that higher rarity they might be broken. Maybe it could work, I'm not sure, and don't have terribly strong feelings one way or the other.

Hmmm...I'm not sure about this one. I think that you want to have the majority of the sets available for a couple hundred dollars(like we do now). Here you are pricing out a lot of people, and this may make a lot of people loose interest in collecting.

Several games have died doing this. So, I would tread very carefully on this issue.

Just a note... I should correct a statement....

I like commons and uncommons. I appreciate all of the tokens. I hope to find uses for some of them someday....

As for Weapons, if you already own 25-50 of each common or uncommon and you have a stack of 5-10 +1 weapons, you don't really need any more +1 weapons, do you? Really? Why on earth would someone with that many tokens care whether or not their +1 longsword was replaced on the rarity scale by a longsword?

Yes; I know we don't want to deprive newcommers. They could trade, however, for a +1 version. Yes, the cost would likely go up.

Well, still trolling for more opinions. Hopefully, we'll have more chime in. I'm wondering if the fear of loosing a few +1 weapons will scare everyone away. No, I'm not advocating the removal of +1 weapons.

JKW

The problem is not at all, in my opinion, loosing a couple +1 weapons.
The problem is making sure that the casual party that has exactly 7 bags of tokens and has never played before will be able to finish the dungeon.

If we remove the items like you suggest, but there are appropriate have alternatives available, that would be a fine idea.

I think the URs are like that now. A complete set of 20 are still out of my reach.
What's another category or two like that? Really?

PLATs were like that THIS year.
Just set your personal goal lower. I know at least one person who settled for a complete set of PLAT Scrolls. The person didn't go for *every* Plat.

I do see your point, however...you don't want to upset your major contributors.

Hm....the dungeon is supposed to be playable without ANY tokens. Are we now saying that players need a +1 weapon in order to complete the dungeon? If so, I'm with Henry, there's way too much power creep going on. Really. Players should NOT need a +1 weapon. A +1 weapon is a Luxary. I'm not talking about taking out all +1 weapons or anything. Just looking at the theme. War. Resources are limited. It might be difficult to outfit everyone in Greyhawk with the finest sword, armor, and shield.

JKW
Just like I said above, my point is not at all about +1 weapons. Please read my above post. Begineers need simple weapons that have the capacity to take down the monsters they encounter. Taking away things like the common longsword doesn't exactly help them, unless there is something just as good at that level for them.

And, um...no tokens?! So you plan on fighting everything with your bare hands? I'm not sure that would work very well.

Also, your idea to have a warzone and limit things is very workable, so don't think I disagree with it. I am just saying that it has to be done carefully.

I read your post and that's the message I took away from it too. The idea that shifting weapons and armor up would somehow make the event too hard for people with a random bag only. The +1 weapon thing was just an example of what might get shifted.

Re: Need Your Token Ideas for 2008! 16 years 7 months ago #142

Here's a list of what I started (before looking at this thread, so there are some duplicates as other people have suggested similar items):

Common Consumable Chalk
Common Consumable Strips of Leather
Common Consumable Leather Squares (was thinking of something to write on or find other uses for)
Common Consumable Buckler Shield Small, wooden shield. No metal. New picture. AC-1. Usable by all that can use shileds.
Common Consumable Soap (haven't looked it up, is that what Woad is, DD?)
Common Consumable Torch
Common Consumable String or Yarn
Common Permanent Bedroll
Common Permanent Blanket
Common Permanent 10' Pole Due to room sizes, more likely a 6' or 8' pole.
Common Permanent Bucket
Common Permanent Belt
Common Permanent Belt Pouch
Common Permanent Sack, Large
Common Permanent Sack, Small

Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: Sonic Blast Does automatic 8 hp of damage to monsters. 100% affective against crystaline creatures and contructs like Stone Golems; creatures highly susceptible to vibrations.

Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: RazorShards (Rodski's RazorShards) This spell unleashes a blast of razor-sharp shards of crystal/stone flying through the air towards its target. Land a slider on 16 (18 on Hardcore) or better to hit. Does 12 HP or damage. No Saves. Perhaps only 10 HP of damage?

Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: Sleep Will saving throw DC12 or higher or be put into a magical slumber. Creature awakes after first attack hits (not first combat round, but after the first single attack hits) or if spell is negated by other means. Only one attempt per encounter. In other words, only one sleep spell can be cast/attempted per encounter.

Rare Consumable Stone Bullet or named Masterwork Carved Stone/Stone Bullet. Gives +1 to damage when used with a sling.

Rare Consumable Strong Healing Herbs (perhaps use a specific name - need to look up in book of flora) Usable by All. Heals 5 HP of damage. When applied by a Druid, heals 7 points of damage. Possibly include Ranger for bonus.

Rare Consumable Firecrackers Something to make a series of loud booms. Could be used to 1) make noise; 2) temporarily deafen the entire room (act as a silence spell for 1 round); 3) disturb any spellcasting for 1 round due to jarring nature of the continuous booms; 4) your idea goes here. :) Does this need a source of fire or just the pull of a cord to ignight?

Rare Permanent Stylish Silk Shirt Charisma +1
Rare Permanent Spyglass (in reality, this is rare, but in current TD lines, it would probaby be an Uncommon)
Rare Permanent Magnifying Glass (in reality, this is rare, but in current TD lines, it would probaby be an Uncommon)

Ultra Rare Consumable Gem of Healing Heals all characters 8 HP.

Ultra Rare Permanent Great Helm +1 AC-2. Usable by all that can use Helms.

Uncommon Consumable Caltrops Multiple ideas. 1) Player states he is tossing the caltrops on the ground near the monster during combat. Player must score an unaltered 16 or higher on the battle board to successfully deploy caltrops near the monster. Monster must roll an unaltered DC18 or higher in order to avoid stepping on the caltrops during combat. 2) Player tosses caltrops to ground in the vacinity of the monster. Player must score an unaltered 17 or higher - doing so means the monster had stepped onto the caltrops and suffers damage. Damage Wheel is 1-6 because this is a consumable token.

Uncommon Consumable Candle
Uncommon Consumable Ink & Quill Possibly just the Ink with the Quill being a separate item.
Uncommon Consumable Sealing Wax
Uncommon Consumable Parchment or Ppyrus
Uncommon Consumable Flasks of Oil Could fill a lantern, or use as a cocktail. As long as a unaltered combat board slide is within 4 points of the AC of the monster, then the lit oil is affective (that's assuming the players had something to light it with). Damage is 6 first round, 3 2nd round, and 1 3rd round, for a total of 10 points of damage. Only one such flask may be used per encounter. Does this require an ignition source?

Uncommon Consumable Healing Herbs (perhaps use a specific name - need to look up in book of flora) Usable by All. Heals 3 HP of damage. When applied by a Druid, heals 5 points of damage. Possibly include Ranger for bonus.

Uncommon Permanent Warhammer Damage: 1-6. Usable by: Cleric, Barbarian, Paladin, Fighter
Uncommon Permanent Morning Star Damage: 2-8. Usable by: Barbarian, Paladin, Fighter
Uncommon Permanent Fishhook
Uncommon Permanent Whistle
Uncommon Permanent Ladder, 10' or 12' Need bag of holding for this?
Uncommon Permanent Glass Bottle I can see using the Glass bottle, Mortar & Pestle, and some Ingredients to create a combo item.
Uncommon Permanent Hourglass I can see you figuring a way to make this aid in the solving of a puzzle.
Uncommon Permanent Lantern Permanent, assuming we don't keep track of the Oil used. Does this require an ignition source?

Unique Permanent Magical Instrument Bard only. Increases Bard Song to a total of +2 to Hit and +2 Damage. Mandolin or Flute. Something "classic."

Very Rare Potion Consumable Potion: Faerie Fruitiness Allows consumer to levitate
Very Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: Roteball (Rodski's Roteball) This spell allows a single thought (sentence or short paragraph) to be transmitted from one creature to another acrost a distance via a ball of thought. The receiving entity must be able to understand the language of the sending entity. The entities must be within vitual range for the roteball to find its recipient.

Very Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: RazorShards (Rodski's RazorShards) This spell unleashes a blast of razor-sharp shards of crystal/stone flying through the air towards its target. Land a slider on 16 (18 or 19 on Hardcore) or better to hit. Does 16 or 18 HP or damage. No Saves. Perhaps only 14 hP of damage?

Very Rare Scroll, Arcane Consumable Scroll: Riverboat (Rodski's Riverboat) Hey, you never know when you're going to want to travel in style down a river. :) Okay, so perhaps the spell can be scaled down, say to the size of a Skiff. Doesn't go with the R theme, but oh well.

Very Rare Consumable Potion: Death's Door Plus In same room as character's death, potion can be used to bring dead character back to life and restores enough life force energy to the character to bring the character to a total of 8 HP.

Very Rare Permanent Buckler Shield +1 AC-2. Usable by all that can use shileds, including Druids.

Cursed Very Rare Helm of Leaching When donned, this winged helm latches on to the victim's cranium with microscopic tendrils and begins sucking blood from the victim's cranium at the rate of 1 (or 2) HP per round. The prblem is - how to remove the helm without damaging the wearer further? Cold based attacks might work, so might heat, but I'd say they are less effective. It's not a curse, so remove curse has no effect. It's a living entity, or at least the inside of the helm is. Heck, you could make a Room around this.

Note: The above list was made before thinking about changing the status of items rarities from 2007 to 2008.
