TOPIC: I was just thinking.

I was just thinking. 7 years 2 months ago #13

With all the Wizard scrolls I haven't used in years since I haven't played the Wizard in a long time, but now I will be playing a wizard at the celebration. Now having the mage speed goggles I plan to smack the heck out of anything with dual scrolls throughout.

I am thinking alot about 6 wizards in True Horde (depending on how TH works) that AOE scrolls could be huge. Casting 12 AOE scrolls a turn. And we now have an uncommon AOE scroll that Paladins, Clerics, Rangers, Druids and Bards can use as well. That would be another potential for 15 AOE scrolls. There could be ALOT of damage to lots of things in one turn.

The Scroll Case bonus damage probably goes into a pool

It does, but still if you had 21 scrolls a turn that is 42 additional points to direct a something tougher. (assuming everyone was using the Greater Arcane Scroll Tube)

tokendb.com/token/arcane-scroll-tube/

If a scroll boosted by this tube can affect more than one target, the caster gets a total of 1 extra point of healing/damage from the tube, not +1 point per target. The caster chooses the recipient of the extra point as s/he sees fit among the eligible recipients.

While I was over at tokendb. I realized there was one in 2010 that Paladin's and Rangers could use that did 3 points of damage to all. Scroll Soundburst

So 3 Paladins, 3 Rangers, 3 Clerics, 3 Druids use Soundburst do 36 to all + 24 pool.
3 Bards use Chain Lightning 36 to all OR Leaping Lightning 24 to all + 6 pool OR Acid Burst 15 to all + 36 to 1
6 Wizards use 2 Chain Light 144 to all OR 2 Leaping Lightning 84 to all + 24 pool OR 2 Acid Burst 60 to all + 144 to 1 target.

Potential that is 216 to all and another 54 pool if no one makes saves again Chain lightning. Or 144 to all if you are worried about saves and 54 pool. Or 111 to all and 174 to one target using Acid Burst if you have 1 big target.

I think my math is off, but it is close.

My group uses consumables,.. why? Mostly "just because". We run nightmare, we live till the last room. We don't generally "need" to use consumables but why have them if you don't use them. We have a lot of ways to use them as free actions so we typically take advantage of it when we can.

My top 10 consumables for my party:
Runestones (whatever 1 or more for everyone)
Arrows (+whatever)
Sling bullets (+whatever)
Scroll Prayer (opening round free action)
Bull's Str (opening round free action)
Cat's Grace (opening round free action)
Distillated healing (free action - grind)
Scroll - AOE (area of effect scroll whatever flavor, as needed mostly in grind)
Scroll/potion - situational : there comes a time where some consumables can really make a difference in a room. A fire monster and using a potion of fire resistance or something to that effect.
Death's Door. (try not to use these but keep them on hand)
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!

My wizard always carries wands and scrolls just in case of lack-of-spell emergency.

Wands got a boost this year with Medallion of Mystic Mouth - without using a wand as a free action the ability to do 3-8 damage is just not a good use of a full round action.

There are a few wands with interesting non-damage effects.

Jeff hinted there could be more boosts coming for wands next year during 2017 design.

I keep a handful of healing potions just in case. And a couple Fallen Stars and Potion Death's Door available... just in case.

My group runs rares and tries hardcore occasionally on puzzle runs (two of us break the rare mold and have real tokens) but we use the common consumables for healing, and the uncommon healing bits if we're exceptionally low, usually saving spell healing for combat situations. I don't know if we've ever used non-healing potions, any scrolls or wands however. I do know there is some ammunition hanging around for ranged combat, when that is forced on us.

I always carry some consumables with me since i tend to play with pug's alot. I'll burn more serious consumables in grind. I tend to like to use my common/uncommon stuff as with alchemist's pouch (and now scroll tube) it feels more cost effective. My goal for my own parties to make sure everyone makes it to last room.

Ammunition i should start using instead of auto scrap like i've been doing.

I'd like to see more consumables used but can understand that you don't want to add another pay to play/win mechanic where now we have to bring them on every run.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven
