Simple is better overall for explanation and less room for loopholes. I'd rather get more chances to use these tokens the we spend money on but not if paragraphs of clarifications are required to use said tokens.

I don't envy the Coaches on the rules clarification conundrum while filling out the party card. As a Combat D.M., the details of these rules get lost in the heat of battle. If it's any consolation, during combat; players are barely able to keep up with "slide & step away". The finer points melt-away when trying to inflict a couple hundred hit points to a monster within twelve minutes!
True Dungeon IS teamwork. Tokens offer a better chance of survival for the team. :-)

My 2 cents is to simplify as much as possible. In practice overly complex rules are likely to be ignored, mis-interperated, or just considered unfun.

And it seems like that may be where we ended up despite the best of intentions in an effort to keep a very small number of players from abusing free actions.

Anyway for BBB what about a wording like "allows the bard to cast without the need for their hands while playing"
Semper Gumby, Always flexible.

Sartre sits in in a coffee shop and asks for a coffee without cream. The barista apologizes “Sorry, we don't have any cream. Can I offer you a coffee without milk instead?”

If you wanted to go that route just call the BBB a focus item and your sorted.

I still prefer my previously stated way where the drums accompany the spell, so the gear issue is sorted out and it allows them to take advantage of a free action item and keeps their AC true to the sheet.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!
