Interesting differences in security protocols.

When I was about eight or ten years old, I was at Jewel (small grocery store) and my mother told me I could get some candy. Not seeing any platcic bags at the bulk section (they were out), I put some candy in my pocket, fully intending to take it out of my pocket at the counter as we left the store. Instead, I was approached by three men in white dress shirts and ties and accused of stealing. They scared the crap out of me. In the end, I was so pissed off at being accused of a crime when I had never even considered stealing before, that I ended up stealing several items (star wars cards with the bubble gum) from them in the next 12 months.

When I worked for the Wholesale Club, which was bought out by Sam's Club (I think ownership might have been under Sam's Club when this took place), the staff, including the cashiers, were given training by Loss Prevention. We were told that if we saw a customer hide a product inside another - or otherwise apparently attempt to steal an item - that we had to keep our eyes on the customer 100% of the time (not sure what happened if you blinked) or the company could not accuse the customer of anything. We were told to never take your eyes of the customer but to somehow get the attention of a manager so the manager could approach the customer. We were also told that the customer had to make it outside the store with the unpaid-for merchandise in order for it to be considered theft.

I have a friend who worked for Meijer security for at least three years.
From what I was told, Meijer security actually had to see someone steal an item before they could approach the customer.

Brian's experience makes me want to go buy a full set of clothes from KMart and re-enter the store an hour later, fully decked out in KMart clothing and gear and to do this several times just to see what happens. It would be great if I could whip out a receipt and say "ha, ha!" Who knows what would happen though, eh?
