My wife and I avoid restaurants with a posted "no weapons" policy. Since the 50s, about 98% of mass shootings have occurred in gun-free zones.

I don't think the Texas law sounds the least bit scary.

A very debatable assertion. Politifact rates it as half true. At the very least what is counted as a gun free zone is questionable. Fort Hood was included in the count.

(And for the record, there is a gun in my house)

I believe "gun-free" was defined as a place where the general public is not allowed to carry weapons. Therefore, Ft Hood qualified since only on-duty security personnel were allowed to be armed - much like any "gun-free zone" where armed police may patrol.

And Politifact's impartiality is also debatable, considering their major donors are... but this isn't where anyone really wanted this to go.

Cool sword, eh?

And yet you went there... ;)

I also have a United Cutlery replica of Fili's sword. Not particularly sharp, but you wouldn't want to be hit by it.

I felt taunted...

My sword collection isnt very impressive: a katana, "Sting," an Egyptian dagger, and short sword in a purple velvet scabbard. All cheap imitation unlicensed stuff. I wouldn't want to get stuck with any of them though...but they are all very emotionally supportive.

I got my sword onto a plane once.

It was complicated, and involved several mad dashes between the airline desk (who told me to wrap it well and check it as over-sized baggage) and the baggage area which told me to take it to security as carry-on because it was only a toy, and security, where they scanned the metal sword and insisted (understandably) that I could not take it on the plane.

In the end, I got to meet a very nice Air Marshall, and surrendered my blade to him in exchange for a claim slip. it got locked in the same locker they store their rifles in, and I got to pick it up after the plane landed.

The super-stressful part was hearing my name called 3 times over the intercom to get to my seat because the plane was ready to take off. I nearly missed the flight while various agencies played pass-the-buck.

This was all pre 9-11.
I can't imagine anything ending so well in current times.

I recently became a sword owner. My neighbor's son moved away, and didn't want his sword when he moved, so she was going to toss it out. Even though part of the handle was broken off, I offered to give it a home. :)

I don't have a sword in the house, but my wife keeps one of my bayonets close by when I am out of town.
Thats not especially sharp either, but would definitely ruin someones day to be on the pointy end of it.

A while back, I saw a video on the question of the best sword for home defense. Spoiler, the result was the Gladius. One commentator suggested that he would prefer the gladius be attached to a shotgun.

I used to have a bunch hanging on walls when I was in chicago. My katana came in seriously handy one time. I was steaming up some chinese buns and one fell into a niche behind the oven. There was no way I could reach in to pick it up, or move the damn oven. I was able to lean over and stab it out with the sword.

I find a locking, hard sided rifle case the best way to get my sword(s) onto planes... :D

We were travelling to an out of state Ren Faire so we checked a 5ft+ pair of fairy wings in a military duffel and a rifle case containing my full size claymore, a cutlass, and her rapier...

Had a great conversation with the security folks - we walked it over to the on site scanner/security check, opened it for htem, and they proceeded to ooh and ah over the shinys before locking it back up and sending it on its way!

That being said, I really l like the idea of the Therapy Sword - I may try that while carrying one here in Texas. :woohoo:

The only question becomes which one? Grossmesser, godenak, or katana?

So a buddy of mine at work and I talk about gun control and the second amendment.
I should say "yes i'm from Texas".

I dislike guns with a passion but I don't typically bother people unless they bother me first about it.
Anyway, my buddy and I were talking and he was proud of an open carry victory somewhere and I sighed and said, "that's SO Lame!"
When pressed I explained that apparently "His" right to bear arms was apparently greater than my right.
He of coarse rebutted saying my rights where the same as his, but I said its all backwards. My chosen Arm is not a firearm but a sword and I defy you to tell me how my Arm isn't MORE accurate to the constitution than his Arm. When the constitution was written they didn't have fancy AR-15s but they did have Sabers!
Also it says "as part of a well regulated militia" of which I know he's not but I actually am. We are very well regulated an meed every week to practice sword play.

It wasn't long after this that Texas made this announcement and soon i'll be able to carry my sword.

And yes, i plan on doing it just because.
LOL

If you are going to go, go big. Go with a two handed sword.

Or a halberd. Yes, do a halberd.
