TOPIC: Newbie looking for group?

Newbie looking for group? 6 years 11 months ago #1

Hello!

I'm a newbie. This will be my first ever trip to GenCon (coming from New York) and I'd like to try True Dungeon. I'm a little nervous though, because it is just me and I don't want to be the weak link in a group of otherwise experienced players.
Are there any groups of people here who wouldn't mind me joining them? Or are there other newbies who'd like to all go together?

First of all... Welcome. We've all been there. There are plenty of good people on here that love to help Newbies. As it gets closer look on the Forum for open slots on runs. Feel free to contact me or TJRat on the forum as sometimes Team Yeti has an opening as well... We all love helping new players.

Yes welcome! I am sure it will not be a problem at all finding a newbie friendly group (most are). I would suggest wait till registration opens and then look at the posts of people looking for others to join their group and they will gladly tell you if they are looking for experienced or new players.

Plenty of folks around here to help. Also if you can make Origins a great way I'd think to jump in and give it a shot.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

I'm sure you'll find plenty of options here. As for me, I already have reserved the last Moongate Puzzle run on Saturday night (11:25PM) and am planning on taking 8 first-time players along with me and my wife (who has only played twice before). If you are interested in joining feel free to PM me here or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

Thanks everyone! Feeling less nervous already.

I unfortunately can't go to Origins. I only get 5 days of vacation from work, so I'm using 4 of them for GenCon.

I will wait and keep an eye out for groups after registration. I was worried if I didn't register on day one I wouldn't get in.

I only have parking until midnight, so I can't do the later time slots, but hopefully I will find a group to run through earlier in the day.

Thank you again everyone for being so welcoming!

I will be hosting a Normal difficulty newbie-friendly run, if event reg cooperates. And I'm sure I won't be the only one! Keep an eye on these forums after the 28th.

Otherwise, my first year I was solo too. I just bought 2 tickets for myself (1 of each dungeon) from GC. I had a fantastic time with both random groups I ended up with. So either way works :)
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

If you are solo, and flexible about the run time, you can definitely get a ticket all the way up to the date of the event. People are always returning them back to the system.

My suggestion though is try to get a ticket from the forum.

TD is the only event that lets you buy all 10 tickets, and many do. That gives them some control over who is playing, and let's people plan ahead. Everyone sells the tickets at face value, partly because doing otherwise is a rick-move, and partly because it's a violation of GenCon rules and could get your badge revoked.

Some sell them at a discount if you give them some or all of your loot.

Getting a random ticket from RUBI, like I did my first year, can work out great, but it could be less so.

You got one of the Lottery slots? Sweet : )

Carolyn: Everyone who has posted so far is good folk, and I'm sure you'd fit in well with just about any run organized through the forums. The big stumbling block with Pick-Up-Groups is that you don't know ahead of time who wants to play which class, or what equipment everyone has, and trying to sort that all out in ~24 mins in the coaching room can lead to... ahem... heated discussions.

Groups which organize ahead of time can sort out almost all those details online, so the 24 mins of coaching is more of a meet & greet, and a time to talk about tactics in the dungeon, and/or share tokens for people who are open to borrowing equipment (many vet groups are more than happy to share, if you feel you'd be under equipped.)

That said, you'll probably want to look for a group which is planning to run in Normal mode or (at the most) HardCore. The Nightmare-level runs which get organized on the forums are generally geared to people who have played before and/or who have a lot of equipment.

Just keep your eyes open after Event Registration, and look for posts with titles like "Slots available, Moongate, normal mode" or "Openings in Hardcore run" ... Or, if you do pick up tickets yourself and want to coordinate with other members of your run who might be on the forums, watch for post titles like "TDA17118362 LFO."
