I had none of the items on the list and was a bit upset that someone who had been playing the game for as long as I have would never had accumulated any of those tokens in that time frame. Granted, there was a lot I didn't know about the token game outside of the dungeon crawls.

Over the years, I noticed people getting some fantastic gear, going on "Nightmare Levels" etc. I honestly had no idea what they were doing that I wasn't. I learned that people were going on all 4 runs - or doing the same run more than once.

I had a very similar experience to this - after playing for around 5 years and buying extra tokens each year I finally decided to look into transmuting - this was the year after Draco-Lich Undone. I think our entire hoard of tokens added up to.... 1/2 the ingredients needed for a Greater Cloak of Destiny.

I remember being baffled like - how do people "make the jump" to having fully kitted out characters, etc.. I started spending more time in the forums and eventually figured it out.

But I'm sure there are a bulk of even repeat players, who have been playing for years, who have only the foggiest conception of the rules, what things impact their character sheet, that they need to tell DMs about things that don't, how transmuting works, PyPs, etc..

The paradigm shift for me came in 2005, when Hardcore was introduced and we played Normal mode because we had very few tokens. After that I went full-bore into token buying, to outfit the party so that we would be able to run on Hardcore. My goal for several years was to outfit our party as well as could possibly be done, and we were right at that point for a year or two, before Artifacts/Legendaries/etc pushed that goal out of reach (which I'm totally OK with).

And now for something completely different. Back to the original topic.

Beertram has offered the seven tickets on this run to my son's group.

I now have 8 tickets for BHM Puzzle at 4:51 Thursday to dispose of. I'll start a new thread for that. You can PM me as well.

My humble apologies for actually posting on topic. ;)
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Unless I have a drop out, I won't have room for a merc

Okay I misunderstood. I thought you could not make the run and it was your son and 6 friends. Also I thought it was for the 4:51. There is no way I could merc for the 6:51 run as I will be in the middle of my run at that time. Fail all around the board for me.

This is why I turned all my extra tickets in to the GC Event site.

Mike Steele wrote: Angela, I feel the same way you do about solo runs. I understand why people want to do them, and more power to them, but for me the main draw of True Dungeon is the shared experience with 9 friends. :)

I agree the main draw is friends and new friends. I just tallied up my runs and I have:

Golden Ticket - Because who wouldn't want to do a GT?
Existing Friends Runs - 7
Possible New Friends (Pugs) - 6
Solo Run - 1

I have done short runs (less than 10 players) the last few years mostly to increase the challenge of the event. When running with 10 people they would all have to agree to increase the difficulty beyond Nightmare which isn't guaranteed. By running with 5, 3, 2, or solo you can easily get agreement and increase the difficulty.
