TOPIC: Late Player Notifcation

Late Player Notifcation 7 years 11 months ago #1

Because it's that time of year when I have True Dungeon on the brain. I spent a bit of time looking something up, which lead me to the coaches' guide pdf.

I came across a table with instructions on when/what to do about late players (page 13)

It said that if a player is a few minutes late and gave notification, TD would hold the spot for the player longer than they would for a player that was running late and didn't give notification.

How would a player go about giving notification that they might be a few minutes late?

Off the top of my head:
  • Electronically contact a friend who is on the run with them.
  • Assuming the player knows in advance they will be delayed (e.g., back to back runs), they can notify us in person.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Bullet point one is sometimes met with resistance from the ticket-takers. Sometimes they take a hard stance that if they don't have the ticket, they can't hold the spot.

Here is what I do, turn up way early, get your wrist band, sign your waiver and get your pack of tokens.
Let someone else in the run know you've already checked in but will be late. Use the boards here to find them.
Give them your pre-printed party card with all the characters you can play pre-filled out. Indicate which character you'd prefer playing by numbering them in order. Helps to get their phone # so you can hook up earlier for the transfer or email them the party card in advance.

You could try and tell the person running the wristbands maybe even leave a written note with the above info.

Things get much easier if you own all 10 tickets and have someone on the run with you that doesn't have a conflict.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!

Related question:

If I have multiple runs in a day, can I check in for all of them simultaneously at the start of the day? Or is that frowned upon?

If your runs are spread out all over the day, checking in at the beginning of the day for ALL of them is problematic. There are significant accounting/accountability issues.

But if you want to check in for runs that are relatively close together, that's something we can easily accommodate. In fact, if you've got back to back runs, we actively encourage checking in for both before your first run.

I've been pretty good with scheduling this year .. but I've still one example where I'm going to run into this as well :

On Thursday morning I am running at 9:38a combat (ending ~ 11:38a) DDA, I couldn't pass it up :)
I have a random PUG (puzzle) event that I purchased during event registration at 11:25a.

My plan is to register for both that morning .. say ... 9:15 ish and let them know that I will be coming out of the first run while the PUG starts forming in the coaching room. (and will be there about 1/2 way through)

Per Valetutto, I'll have a party card filled out with a few characters in the order that I would like to play them.

Since I expect it will be a 100% pick up group - I will probably put Paladin and Cleric as #1 and #2 (not sure what order) and attempt to keep the potential new players alive through the run.

I would also totally be willing to 'flesh out' new players slots so they feel a little more secure in the run.

I'm hoping to be able to coordinate through the forums . but by now it isn't likely that anyone has tickets to this event .. I probably would have heard.

So here is my problem .. who would I leave all this information with? Could I tape it to the wall of the 11:25 room? Just catch the coach prior to hitting my first room?

I don't want to add to their already busy schedule .. and fully expect that giving them information some 8-10 runs prior isn't the best of scenarios .. I just don't know anyone else who will be in the run.

advice?

Isn't there a manila envelope for each run where they keep wrist bands and and whatnot? Maybe you can get the check-in folks to put it in there. Maybe write a short note about what's going on, and why you want the classes you do.

advice?

My advice is that - if you're coming into Coaching at least 12 minutes late - please don't bring a bunch of tokens to flesh out the new players. The Coach will already be writing down the party card stats, and it's a Coach's worst nightmare to have a token-heavy player arrive late, and start handing out tokens to newbies which change all the stats.

It may also be confusing to the new players, who need to ask questions about what the tokens do, or whether a +1 Long Sword is better than a Great Axe (the axe has higher damage! Oh, but if I'm not using a 2-handed weapon I can use a shield, so can we change the AC too?) and whether a Ring of Pro +1 is better than a Ring of Fire Resistance.

Please. Don't.

That said, if you want to show up with a few extra tokens like scrolls or healing potions or things which don't need to be recorded on the party card, that's cool! Just don't be that guy who walks in at the last minute and tells everyone eh's much more experienced than they are, so everyone should use his equipment and do what he says. That's not how to start the party off on the right foot. (Srsly, I don't think you'd be that guy. Just... I've seen it happen too often.)

Hold onto it yourself.
Coaches, assistants, and admins have enough to keep track of already. I assure you, the coach will be plenty delighted that you have your own stats completed.

As Raven said (albeit more politely), coming in late and wanting to revise everyone's stats will earn you icy stares of death from your coach.

Do not do that.
