I got tickets to Into the Deeperdark (combat) on Thur at 10:36 AM and Behold Her Majesty (combat) on Sat at 10:50 am. This will be my 1st year playing and I was looking for some suggestions. I am going to Gen Con alone so I will not know anyone in the groups. I want to get some tokens to be better prepared, but how are classes selected? I don't want to show up ready to be a fighting class then end up being something else and all my tokens are useless. Also what is the easiest way to figure out a good build for different classes? What are some good sources to get tokens?

Thanks for any help, and any other suggestions are welcome.

There are token stores on the forums. People sell tokens old and new.
Your best bet is to have a few classes prepared.
A lot of items will overlap.
Also look through and or post a different thread with your run time/day. You might find the group and work things out
FYI ...don't spend 100s of dollars( or more) until you decide TD is for you.
You can spend$20 and get a few good builds ready

Thanks for the help. I came across TDTavern's pre-built sets, they are 30-$50 and seemed like they could be pretty good. If i don't find out what classes i will play they might be a waste. Maybe I will see if I can find others in my run and go from there.

Completely agree with Laz. Try to find your group and work things out. Find tokens that can be used for multiple classes... it definitely helps. I can manage alot of classes with just switching out a couple tokens.

A fighter/barbarian/rogue/cleric/paladin/Druid might all be able to wear some of same armor. Then you look at a weapon they can all use.
Then you can look at things like gauntlets, belts of strength etc

Go to tokendb . Com. Then you can do searches of what can be worn by all.

Then you can have a bunch of generic builds and you can build a lot cheaper.

Semper Gumby, Always flexible.

Thanks. I will definitely be trying to get some stuff that works for multiple classes unless i get into contact with the parties I will be playing with.

Lots of advice already for finding your group, and looking for tokens which aren't class specific (excellent post, Picc!)

I'll chime in to say that if you are at least a bit flexible, you can almost always work something out with your party, to play a class which you're interested in.

For example, if you come to the table dead set on being the Paladin, you might be disappointed to find someone else already desperately wants that role.

BUT, if you're flexible and just want to play a Fighting class, you've got: Fighter, Dwarf Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, and Monk, and possibly even Rogue. That's half of the available classes to pick from. The odds of coming to a table to find that all of those classes are already taken is low. And even if they are all taken, the odds that all of those players are *dead set* on their class and can't imagine changing to help out a new player, is pretty miniscule.

The biggest factor contributing to success in True Dungeon isn't how many tokens you have, or how well you slide/memorize/disarm traps: It's TEAM WORK. True Dungeon attracts people who like D&D, but it retains the people who are good at team work. Odds are that when you meet your party, you'll find a few people who have their favoured class and are really hoping to play it (but might have a back-up in case they can't) and a few people who are pretty flexible ("anything but Wizard") and most people will just want to build the best team possible to survive the dungeon. They'll work with you, to swap tokens, or classes, or share memorization strategies, to make this party the best it can be.

Good luck!

(And if at all possible, arrive early! Sorting classes & tokens can take time.)

As someone who was in your exact situation last year. Classes are chosen by whoever gets to the coaches room first with experienced players having the right to trump you when they show up. A little flexibility on your parts helps resolve these situations easily which is why everyone else is saying to have multiple class builds ready to go.

Step 1: Look to see if there are threads started for those times, you might get lucky and be able to coordinate ahead of time. (Suggested multiple times)
Step 2: Decide if you are as a person more comfy token sliding or doing the memorization. That will be the half of the party you concentrate on. Token sliding is (Barbarian, Dwarf, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger). Memorization is (Cleric, Druid, Wizard, Elf). Bard and Rogue and different but their equipment is a lot a lightly armored token slider.
Step 3: Make a small purchase for the half that you are doing in any of various places (including maybe a few random packs from True Dungeon itself.) I think last year I had 5 or 6 packs going into GenCon from people who were are WYC and don't play plus a strategic purchase on ebay of about 20 dollars and I was very well equipped for a new player on the token sliding part of the game.
Step 4: Each player will get a pack of tokens are trading happens in the coaches room to help maximize characters (especially for a new person)
Step 5: Have fun, you will probably change classes. Don't be surprised if you are different class each time and you might really enjoy the class you least expected. I was a different class each of the first 3 times I did runs (Bard, Fighter, Paladin) and will be a 4th class (Cleric) for both runs at GenCon. Now I am starting to be able to buy tokens with purpose.

TD is designed to be playable with just your starter packs, if you swap around in the coaching room. Not optimized by any means, just playable.

If you play puzzle runs, classes are largely irrelevant, except in 2 or 3 of the seven rooms. Many people with small collections start there, but many veterans love puzzles more than combat.

So, don't stress about tokens, especially in the first year or two. (I thought I'd be wizard or paladin, but I've ended up a cleric. Who knew? If I'd dumped all my money into the other ones, I'd be locked into paths I'd rather not take.) So don't be in too much of a hurry to specialize too soon.

Plus, what everyone else said.

Just want to clarify one thing Tony said.

From www.truedungeon.com/how-to-play/item/12-rewards

3rd: 3,000-5,999 XP - REWARD: You get first pick of character class before 1st and 2nd level players. (All 3rd level+ players will roll off for order of choosing.)*

* If two or more 3rd-level or higher players can't amicably decide who gets to play a disputed class, roll a die. Whomever rolls highest may play that character class. Re-roll ties. If nobody in your group has a die, ask a TD volunteer if they can get one for you.

Note: Being a higher player level than 3rd does not bestow any bonus to this roll. E.g., if a 6th-level player and a 3rd-level player are rolling-off against each other, they both have an equal chance at getting the character they want.

It is arguable if 3,000 XP is an experienced player. You can walk 2 hardcore (or nightmare) runs and die in the first room and have 3,400XP (if my math is correct). I don't know if that would make you experienced.
You either discover a star or you don't. You arrogant punk.
