TOPIC: Alert! Fake Tokens...

Alert! Fake Tokens... 8 years 11 months ago #1

We have had fake tokens arrive at TD HQ before, but it just happened again today. I am making this post to warn people about buying tokens from people they don't know well. I think one person bought some fake Rod of Seven Parts tokens, and I had the unpleasant task of informing them today.

Please be careful and only buy from established players, please.

I'm surprised but I suppose I shouldn't be.

I don't see a problem with identifying counterfeiters on this site. Whoever got victimized or Jeff, go ahead and identify the perpetrator. It will provide discouragement of this behavior in the future and protect others from the problem.

If you bought it from someone other than Jeff, then you should be able to identify the source.

I don't deal in tokens on a regular basis, but I have message records of all my trades.

That really sucks. Time to start checking any tokens I trade more carefully.

FYI
The top of real True Dungeon tokens are protected by a very thick plastic coating and the graphics are nice and sharp. Colors should not vary with in a print year.

There may be slight differences between years however. Older Widseth's will look a little different than the newer ones but all should still be sharp and clearly printed.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

I'm not sure this is reliable advice - I have lots of mundane tokens with varying print qualities / blurriness to them. Things like uncommon healing potions that no one would bother counterfeiting. Kirk sold a Charm of Sweet Air on eBay which was noticeably different in coloration from the standard version, which I presume he opened himself from a factory pack.

I definitely have lots of trade items which look very different from one another:

The one on the right is noticeably more saturated color-wise than the one on the left. I'm pretty sure both of these came from True Dungeon - so I doubt either are counterfeit.

The best test I've seen is trying to scratch off the label from the sides. The counterfeits aren't quality and will damage.

I actually contacted Jeff about a few trade tokens I saw with similar color issues thinking they might be counterfeit but he said they were ok.

Given that it's happened a few times before I think everyone needs to be very cautious and let the group know the potential source of these false tokens.

With something like a segment 2 tho it could have been forged 2-3 years ago and traded off early so that might be harder to track down...

I've only seen a couple fakes, but if those were representative than you'd have to be willfully blind to not see it as a fake. It's nowhere close as far as what it's printed on.

Don't forget that even though trade tokens don't have a year symbol, they do have different print runs. This accounts for the variation you're seeing in this picture.

Only fakes I've seen were of treasure tokens last year or maybe year before that.

Ouch, man.... that *sucks*.

If s/he got 'em off eBay, I hope that Buyer Protection can help get the money back.

Also, to anyone who is thinking of buying expensive tokens: If you have concerns about a seller, feel free to post questions here on the forums!

There's even a thread for sharing info about successful (or unsuccessful) trades:

Post your info about completed trades here

None of the reputable sellers here will mind if someone asks for references. They're also very quick to identify their eBay IDs if you're buying from someone there, and want to connect a forum name to an eBay account.
