Indiana's new discrimination law.... 9 years 1 month ago #1

Regrettably, I will not attend GenCon this year. Unless if by some miracle it is moved last second to another state... which I don't see happening.

I cannot in good conscience do business or do vacation in a state where an open discrimination law is on the books. I will not attend GenCon until either the law is changed, struck down as unconstitional, or GenCon moves to another state.

This means I will also not be attending True Dungeon events as a result. And that I find rather painful and it is regrettable that I cannot support TD this year.

These are my own views, and this is not an attempt to troll anyone or cast a stone.

I respect and support your decision Crow.

It was a difficult decision to make, but for many reasons, I will be attending Gen Con this year. Among those reasons are my commitment to Jeff & True Dungeon. Also, I take some comfort in knowing not all Hoosiers--especially not all Naptowners--support this discriminatory law.

I will decide whether or not to attend Gen Con Indy 2016 at a later date.

ETA: This is my personal decision, not a request for anyone to side with or against me.

I am hoping that this is dealt with by a higher court, and swiftly. I am not sure that would be many states that Gen Con could move that don't have similar legislation. I am trying to find if there is any kind of link between this legislation and ALEC.

Crow, you may find this map useful for planning your vacations. It is from last year, so Indiana would be dark green now instead of light green.

Caveat: I didn't research the map myself, so I'm just assuming that the Washington Post is accurate in what they have shown.

On the other hand, GenCon is not fungible for TD fans. If too many people boycott GenCon, it won't motivate them any more to fight. It will hurt them and Jeff a lot more than it will hurt the state of Indiana. If anything, it will reduce the resources GenCon has at their disposal to oppose the law. So, we will still attend, but we'll buy all our gas in Ohio.

Besides, there's months before GenCon, so there's time for things to change.

I could be wrong, but I suspect this won't have a significant impact on attendance this year. Now, if there are any instances of discrimination, I expect it will instantly be on every major news station. Hopefully the city of Indianapolis understands that and takes precautions that it doesn't happen.

Given the intense negative backlash the state is seeing I would not expect the law to still be on the books by GC time this year, if it's still in place come 2016 I will also need to re-evaluate Indiana.

I'll be surprised if there are incidents in downtown Indy. I think they will pull out all the stops to make it so.

I'll also be surprised if the law is not still on the books. I'm pretty cynical about the politics and ambitions behind this.

Our country has lots of absurd laws on the books that nobody enforces: you can't get a fish drunk don't spank a horse on main street. I hope that this one will be the same at least in Indianapolis

I agree completely on both points. Pence seems very proud of his shiny new piece of sh... legislation.

True, but ridiculous laws can be enforced and sometimes are.

I hope it's not enforced anywhere.

Of course you wont see discrimination in the city. It is a convention town and the businesses are there to take our money.

The discrimination will happen in small towns and out of the way areas that now feel free to disrespect those that are different.

I travel from the west coast and True dungeon is the main reason I go to Gencon. If TD moved to a different con I would happily follow. As it is, it is a difficult decision we all have to make on our own about boycotting Indiana or supporting True Dungeon.

For myself, I will attend this year but will seriously look at other options for next year.

Gen Con's newest letter come after a conversation with out butt head Governor. They asked him to consider an amendment that would recognize the status of gays and lesbians. They also mentioned they would halt plans to expand into Lucas Oil and new hotel event space until this issue was resolved.
