TOPIC: PvP Arena anyone?

Re: PvP Arena anyone? 9 years 8 months ago #13

Raven wrote: If TD decided it was worthwhile to pursue this idea (as a ticketed event) it might be possible to time-share with the True Grind space.

Just need to figure out what to do with the spare slider boards when they are not in use. And how to keep sliders/dice/etc from wandering off, and leaving each event blaming the other for losing things.

Oh, and still: Needs volunteers.

What about us spell casters? Don't we get to play too?

In a simple version where both players have the same stats and spells, and aren't sliding I would imagine it would come down to spell tests which I hear people brag about having memorized. That's why I was thinking of dropping spells in a simple version.

It's a different game, but what if a mage duel consisted of a large matching game.
  • You pick a spell from your list.
  • Then you pick two spots on the match board.
  • Make your match and your spell is cast/hits, otherwise fizzle
  • You and your opponent use the same match board.
  • Game is done when there are no more matching spots.
  • Most damage wins.
  • You must be strategic and use your best spell when you are sure you have a match
  • Wild cards that give bonus damage for taking a risk

I volunteer! For what this does/doesn't turn out to be. Honestly i don't mind stepping up or trying to cajole others into helping getting secondary non XP events going anyway possible.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

An approach to balance things out would be to borrow "sealed" mechanics from other games, a few possible formulations would be below. If True Adventures wanted to run these as events, the ticket price would be set to include the number of token 10-packs used in the event, and some prizes (probably more token 10 packs).

Sealed packs:
  1. Contestants are grouped into batches of 8
  2. Each player gets N sealed packs of 2015 tokens (3?), selects the character they want, and gears them up according to whatever they got in their packs.
  3. The 8 players then play through three rounds of swiss tournament (three rounds, first round pairings are random, 2nd and 3rd rounds pair you with another player with the same win loss record, and then give prizes to the top however many players (3?).

Token Pack Draft:
  1. Contestants are grouped into batches of 8
  2. The contestants sit down around a table, each opens a token 10 pack, picks one token, and passes the remaining 9 to the left.
  3. This pick one token and pass the rest step is repeated until all 10 tokens have been distributed
  4. Steps 2 and 3 are repeated with additional packs - probably for 3 rounds total
  5. Players then use the tokens they have selected over the course of the draft to build their character
  6. Swiss tournament amongst the players

That sounds really fun and a neat idea that I'd certainly try out.
My online token shop: www.tdtavern.com

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

You could charge gold instead of generics, and have the price be a treasure chest the winner draws from instead of a token pack.

Granted, not every class is designed to go P vs. P, but that would be the combatants' choice.

We do this now with DICE... no 5th level at this time. 3v3 or 5v5 is what we have done. The team that doesn't have a healing type usually loses... just FYI.

We did add some other abilities to make it interesting. Fighters with shields equipped can guard another player. (if the other player has a shield and is a fighter can't guard another play except for the one that is guarding him i.e. cross guarding) We have a bunch of other house rules that we have fun playing. Sit at a table and play.

Your hit points are increased (since most of us have +15 or higher two hits and you are down.

Never thought about doing a sealed event, I might have to purchase extra token packs just for the sealed event.

Like the idea but one on one is no fun. I think a 5 on 5 party duel, $10.00 each gets you 5 rolls of tokens to mix in your party, the wizard gets a paladin to hide behind. bards, clerics, rogue. fun for all, team silhouette on the sliding board, spells and healing, and bard song.

Winners could get the losers tokens.

For the guys that want to build their teams, outside the luck of the draw, set up levels of tokens allowed (green, red, purple, orange).

Winners could receive a treasure token.

I'm all for having something, maybe something less rules intensive to time share the space with Grind? I would step up as a volunteer to help with staffing it.

This sounds like fun. I wouldn't mind volunteering for a few short shifts, outside my Combat D.M.ing.
True Dungeon IS teamwork. Tokens offer a better chance of survival for the team. :-)

8 player tournaments with 3 packs per player (only cost) would be a ton a fun...

That is actually pretty cool. I would enjoy playing that :)
