TOPIC: PvP Arena anyone?

PvP Arena anyone? 9 years 8 months ago #1

Sometimes a good (character) brawl is what's needed to let players put animosity behind them.

Given some of the heated threads this week, I'd like to suggest TD add a Player vs. Player Arena next year.

What I picture:
  • 2 players,
  • 3 generic tickets each ($6),
  • 1 room,
  • 1 DM
  • 2 human shaped slider boards
  • Roll for initiative
  • 5 rounds, person that's done the most damage wins.
  • Winner receives loser's ear a token pack.

GO!

Updated:
A) Simple form
  • Both players have the same stats and weapon.
  • Both targets are the same with same stats.
  • There could be multiple pairs of targets the players could choice from.
  • No potions or spells
  • It's basically a sliding contest

B ) Personalized form
  • Probably more money
  • Simplified arena char sheets pe-filled in by players.
  • Player uses their weapon.
  • Player uses their AC.
  • Players play as the targets and get to roll any applicable saving throws.
  • Spells are allowed, including healing spells.
  • No potions.
  • Character/Class HP doesn't matter because it's just total damage.
  • DM write's each players name on the opponent's target.

If you can find a way to run it without a slider board, this seems like a mini-game that anyone could run in the storyscape area.

You could charge gold instead of generics, and have the price be a treasure chest the winner draws from instead of a token pack.

Granted, not every class is designed to go P vs. P, but that would be the combatants' choice.

I don't personally think it is viable.

With such massive gaps due to Power Creep, along with things like Legendaries, Artifacts, and all sorts of unique GT effects, coming up with a "fair" and "balanced" system seems extraordinarily hard. Not impossible, but it makes me seriously wonder about its feasibility.

If there was SPACE and Volunteers for this, I think you just have them battle without tokens and as generic fighters. So just make it a sliding contest versus who has the best tokens.

PvP was tried as the 'extra' on the first Golden Ticket run I went on. It was a free for all between the two GT parties. It was universally reviled.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

Yes, I was there too. The only time I ever got a Golden Ticket and boy was that year super underwhelming.

PvP was bound to be unbalanced because the character cards are not designed for it. Player + damage does not scale well with Player HP, which resulted in all sorts of one-hit kills.

There used to be a daily event in the Tavern called "Tavern Brawl", which was essentially this. It was a lot of fun, and many people participated. I would love to see it come back.

I can see some problems though, r/t: space, volunteers, noise levels, etc.

This was very close to what I was thinking!! I've expanded my original post now that I've had more time.

If the tavern came back I was thinking that would be the perfect place for it.

Space I think is the biggest issue. But hopefully the cost and short period of battles could pay for a volunteer's time.

I expanded on my original post. I don't think this would be an issue in the simple form, and in the personalized form (if feasible) players would have to agree to fight, so they self monitor if it's going to be a balanced fight. At $6, it's not too hard if you miss judge the strength of your opponent.

I do highly respect your and Raven's opinions and input in this area, being the Grind DMs.

I would be willing to run something like this, space allowed.

1 generic ticket, 4 tiers

Novice: Base Stats AC 17/ Hp 24/ d6 damage wheel

Intermediate: 3 tokens allowed 1 of each common, uncommon and rare

Pro: 5 tokens: any 4 rare or less, 1 purple.

Master: 7 tokens any UR or less.

All tokens must be legal for Fighter.

Prizes would be a treasure token for rd 1, a treasure token x 5 for round 2, and a special prize for round 3 (the finals)

If TD decided it was worthwhile to pursue this idea (as a ticketed event) it might be possible to time-share with the True Grind space.

Just need to figure out what to do with the spare slider boards when they are not in use. And how to keep sliders/dice/etc from wandering off, and leaving each event blaming the other for losing things.

Oh, and still: Needs volunteers.
