2009 1C Morning Star Question 15 years 1 week ago #1

So I've looked over the combo recipes and must say the 1C has me scratching my head.

1C - Morning Star (2,3,4,5,6,7) - usable by Barbarian, Cleric, Fighter, Paladin, and Ranger
3x (any mix) Cudgel or Shillelagh
1x Mortar and pestle
2x Aquamarine
30x GP in gold and/or gems

-or-
3x (any mix) Cudgel or Shillelagh
1x Mortar and pestle
1x Mind Flayer Ooze

Unless I have missed an edit or correction somewhere, it appears to me that newer collectors to TD are going to have a harder time completing a 1C combo than a 3C. I'm not sure why a common item from 2007 is required to make this combo. Isn't the 1C supposed to be the simplest to make out of all the combo offerings?

Getting last year's common is certainly easier than getting this year's rare. There are people with hundreds and even as a combo ingredient they have no real value

That is a very good question! (And one I was wondering myself).

I have a moderate-sized collection and I don't have many Mortar and Pestles either. It also doesn't help that they were used in a combo item in 2007 as well (Spider Silk Shirt), which also would have decreased the amount in circulation (though since they did eventually ran out of shirts, that does put a cap on the number of Mortars turned in).

If it was last year's common, that wouldn't be too difficult considering there are still 2008 tokens for sale. This was from the 2007 set which, for most newer collectors, is tougher to find than a rare from this year or last year.

Well, that's good to know. I might actually bring a few dozen with me to gencon then. I think I have them all in a giant bucket somewhere.

Of the Gear items, for some reason the Mortar and Pestles were the rarest, at least that is what I noticed back then and it is my lightest of the older gear items to this day. I do have a dozen or so that I can help others out with at GenCon.

This brings up a question (actually two) that I have had for along time:

1. Are some Commons (UnCommons, Rares) more common than other ones. In other words were there more small mirrors made than small shields?

2. Will it ever be possible to publish mintage numbers (much like the U.S Mint does for coins - yes I am a coin collector as well) on how many were made of each type?

We've never had any indication it's anything other than even.

The only difference is with URs, of course. The PYP skews things. I'll bet there are more HoPs in existence than any other UR for example.

That is probably true, although I'd guess the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength might challenge it. It's been around from the start, and was a top PYP pick for a couple of years. There was a real glut of them this time last year.

I actually asked this question of Jeff and his response was that there is an equal number of each token within a class (at least, common, uncommon, and rare; I didn't ask about ultra-rares).

The Amulet of Wonder may be right up there with the HoP depending on the number of each printed. As far as I've heard those two are the only URs that are 'Sold Out' from a PYP perspective.

Mintage numbers would only really be useful if we also knew how many of those tokens were redeemed for Combo and Trade items. And whether or not any of the redeemed tokens have made it back into circulation.
