In the dungeon, the DMs just make stuff up. Play it cool, the players didn't have time to read all that stuff so they'll never know the difference. ;)

RIGHT - in the dungeon you should have room notes...telling you X is the BEST solution and Y and Z are possible solutions as well...everything else is EPIC FAIL and TPK...or whatever you DMs dream about...

I guess you do need at least guidelines for what will work and what will not, but it would be nice if there is an opportunity to come up with something not previously considered, and have a hope that it would be successful. After all, there may be solutions to challenges that the DMs did not previously consider and I would hope they would not be automatic failures. This is where judgment and discretion come into play, and what makes a great DM as opposed to a decent DM.

The DM code I think is - when in doubt, call a director. This ensures a consistent response. If one DM experiences a random "creative" solution, who is to say it does not come up for someone else working in a different time slot or a different day, or a different room. By calling it in for an answer, or at the very least writing down on the DM white-board, it helps all DMs become more consistent with how stuff is handled.

Never been a DM, but I've been around a few of the VETs and seen some of the training sessions. Consistency starts with the Coaches, and continues to the DMs...it is something TD continually strives to improve as there is volunteer turn-over and gamers just keep coming up with more creative things to do in the dungeon (especially with all the nifty tokens).

Has there been any further progress made on the 2009 token guide? I couldn't find any notice about it.

My teaching load for the semester is about to become non-existent, so if TPTB need any help with proof-reading, etc., send me an e-mail; I'd be happy to help out. (As evidence of my writing skills, please note the proper use of the semicolon in the previous sentence. )
Heck yeah, if you can use a semi-colon properly, you're well qualified!! I didn't notice any misspellings either.... =)

Well, sure, contractions are perfectly acceptable in casual writing. Now if I were to wheel out my thesis (which I'm not going to do, so it's an empty threat), you'd find several hundred pages of text with nary a contraction to be found.

Was it hard to talk about your thesis without giggling? Not many people can say the word "whirligig" in their defense. :)
