TOPIC: Oops! <I screwed up...again!>

Oops! <I screwed up...again!> 15 years 2 months ago #1

Due to the economy and lack of a killer UR token, I thought that tokens sales would be down this year. I perhwas wrong. Ooops!

Token sales are pretty much at the same place as last year at the time of the pre-orders going out. There were a lot of orders during the final week or two of the pre-order period to catch us up.

Last year we had a large first printing and then a smaller second printing. This year, due to increased factory minimums, we are only going to have one printing -- and it is the same size as last year's first printing. Your chances of getting a Golden Ticket is the same as last year.

I am not sure when we are going to sell out this first printing since True Realm will affect sales in an undetermined manner, but my guess is that we will have sold all the tokens in the pre-Gen Con token allotment by perhaps June 1st -- after TD tickets are on sale. We are keeping some tokens in reserve to sell at TR and GC -- and also to give away to each player, so if you don't get your tokens before we sell out online, then you can get some at GC. You just won't have a chance for a Golden Ticket if you wait until Gen Con.

Thanks to everyone for their support, and SORRY for screwing TD out of some funding.
Response #1: Great! Thanks for explaining that we may still have a chance to find a golden ticket in with the rest of our loot between now and June. (Note to self: buy some freaking tokens already!)

Response #2: Doh! (on the financial end of it for TD/TR)

Glad to hear that token sales are going so well! When you talked about the increase in the factory minimums, I knew that was going to make ordering tricky for you. I think a lot of people in the current economic climate would have made the same decision you did. Is it possible for someone to get a Golden Ticket in the tokens that each player gets for their run at True Realm or does the factory do those up separate for you?

Kim

I have to say, I love the Onyx tokens and think that was a great incentive for early orders. The proof UR tokens from last year weren't that distinctive, and the proof UR tokens from the year before, I honestly can't tell them apart from normal tokens from that year. So, while last year I ordered a batch early on, and then a second batch later, this year I put all of my resources into getting one early batch so I could get the Onyx proofs. So, perhaps the desire for Onyx proofs was a driving factor for higher-than-expected pre-order sales.
Jeff, I'm sorry to hear there may be some Token money left on the table - but at the same time, it's great news that you'll be selling out your entire 2009 Token Run early!

I'm not certain that it's a bad thing.

Particularly for those who speculate on the secondary market.

The fact the Jeff's very likely to sell out of tokens may well prompt others to get orders in now.. and encourage others to buy up what's left at the events. Running out At gencon would suck.. but selling out at the end of gencon might be Ideal.

I'm very curious to see how this year's sales go...

Sounds pretty spiffy. I was certainly predicting a dip as well and it's nice to know that sales are holding steady. If we're lucky, it's mostly a ton of new small buyers and not just gaming etc going nuts.

It may not be so bad, if you get the reserve/trade tokens up and running quickly you could get enough tokens back to sell to the populace at the convention, thus perhaps doubling your money.
N8

I was spoiled by the guess we made in 2007. We ended up selling the last of those tokens about a month after Gen Con. It was a perfect guess.

The big unknown this year is True Realm and how it will affect sales. Also, we launched the tokens about two months earlier this year. Heck, we might not even have any online tokens left by the time Gen Con Event Reg opens. That is usually a good period of token sales.

Oh well...I am really here for my looks and not my oracle-ish-ness.

Is there no chance of doing a 2005 token thing again - maybe a "2009b" printing, with just a few changes to spice things up, and incentivize some additional sales?

Or - maybe just pack up a bunch of the tokens in your archives into packs and sell those? You could call them "True Dungeon Chronicles Packs" or something, and advertise them as a Rare, 2 Uncommons, and 7 Commons from any of the 2003-2009 sets. That would get you additional token sales, and clear out your inventory some - win-win! You could even throw in some cool stuff randomly that you might have laying around (Rods of 7 Parts, Skulls of Doom, PURPs, Artisans).

Mike

The only problem that I see with a 2009b printing is that the whole factory minimums thing probably doesn't allow him to place a small order. You'd also have to change the symbol on the token. Those things were much simpler when we still had wood tokens and I think his printer for those might have been local.

Kim

There's the solution - 2009b can be wooden! ;/
