More important than ultra-rares (imho) is the availability of uncommon and rare weapons for the druid, rogue, cleric, and maybe wizard. In last year's tokens, the druid, rogue and cleric each had 1 uncommon weapon that they could use and 1 rare weapon that they could use (out of 5 uncommon weapons and 8 rare weapons, not counting alchemist fire, thunderstone, or special bullets and arrows). And the poor wizard had no uncommon or rare weapons (not that they necessarily need it with the improved spell arsenal- but still, throw them a +1 dagger or something for pities sake).

I would say that you should aim for giving every class (except maybe monk and wizard) at least 2 uncommon weapons and 2 rare weapons that they can use.

Now that belt of retrieval is out there, more potions could be fun too. Not sure what those potions could do.

And I would advocate continuing to use tokens with flavorful names (like orcish dirk instead of dagger, etc).

And I think this should be the year of the long-awaited +1 sling.

I have the counts (checked against the 2008 Token Guide) and Monks, Rogues and Wizards have the least amount of usable Purps at the moment while the Fighters, Paladins, and Barbarians have the most. (I included not just equipment, but potions, miscellaneous things, etc. in the count.)

I'd be interested in seeing the counts, if you don't mind posting them. Some of the guidance isn't surprising, since Monk's are designed to use few tokens, and Wizards don't use most armor & weapons, it makes sense they'd be low on the list. And since Fighters/Paladins/Barbarians can use almost any armor or weapon, it makes sense they would be at the top.

It would be interesting to see how many tokens are designed specifically for each class also. For instance, while many classes can use the Nightshade's +2 Shortsword, only the Rogue gets the full use out of it. Some classes have far more "designer" PURP tokens than others do.

Seems like this should be the year for a cool staff for the Wizard.

Kim

Here's the counts.

Bard = 27

Cleric = 28

Fighter = 39

Paladin = 38

Ranger = 29

Rogue = 23

Wizard = 23

Barbarian = 35

Druid = 25

Monk = 20

As for 'designer' purps (which I define as being something only one class can use or only one class gets the full benefit of)... Rogues and Wizards lead the pack with 2 of 'em each (Nightshade's Shortsword and Ektdar's Tinkering Tool for the Rogues, Cloak of the Mage and the Ring of Wizardry for the Wizards.) Paladins have the Holy Great Sword, Rangers can use the Mithral Short Sword, Monks have Bracer of Quivering Palm, Barbarians have Girdle of Hill Giant Strength, and Bards have Widseth's Mystical Lute.

This leaves the Druids, Fighters, and Clerics with no designer purps as yet.

I would say the +2 Great Club of Bashing counts as a 'designer' purp for the Barbarian.

What about Gearon's mace for the clerics?

Kim

Yeah throwing my coupla pennies in I have always felt the fighter needs a good bump. Not that there isnt a ton of stuff the fighter can use, but something specific would be nice for them. And the monk is obviously a little short from the given list. Given the two, however, I think maybe the monk is a little more deserving for a bump, make them more nifty bits. I think between the fighter and monk we should break down what they have (ie armor pieces, weapons, etc) and that will allow you to see where they come up short.

Looking over every PURP ever made is a good number to look in on from time to time......but running a number from the last set might be helpful too.

Gearon's Mace is a "Cleric friendly" weapon not quite a "Cleric only" weapon as it is usable by quite a few CHARs...and it is still pretty top on the list as far as "one handed weapon damage" goes, if I recall correctly.

So the Fighter & Druid classes are the only ones without Designer PURPs - maybe they should be next. I'm in agreement that a cool Wizard staff would be great.

I agree that it is at the top of the one-handed list, or nearly there. I wouldn't be surprised if Gearon's Mace gets tweaked in the reprint to be more in line with the other designer PURP weapons, so that the bonus damage is only for the Cleric (and maybe Paladin), and that it is +3 Damage instead of just +1 Damage (+3 Total).
