Since we now have access to this one, I was just wondering how it works.

I am imagining:

DM: "Everyone who can be surprised has X happen to them."
Me: "I use my psychic power of ESP so I saw this event coming and am therefore not surprised by it!"

Does it work like that? It seems to me that thematically, it should. Or is it "too late" at that point to prevent the surprise?

Good question Jeff. I was just looking at the Psychic stuff today and wondering about that.

Good question. It says psychic abilities take a free action to activate. Does this mean ESP can be declared at the start of the adventure and is in effect throughout the dungeon, meaning no other abilities can be used, or can it be declared in response to a monster attempting to surprise the party, so it would only be in effect for that room/combat?

Druegar's post in the TDB thread reminded me of this. ESP does not require a free action. So, I am assuming it works how I want it to work. But still, clarification would be appreciated regarding the timing issue.

I spoke to Druegar regarding this at TDC. He will likely make a wording adjustment to the ESP text clarifying that ESP and activating slow fall do not take a free action.
