TOPIC: Token Storage, Travel and During the Dungeon

Token Storage, Travel and During the Dungeon 10 years 7 months ago #1

Hello everyone! I know this has been commented in the past but it seems the postings were a bit stale. This is Year 1 where I became heavier into token collection and trade tokens, so I find myself in a dilemma as the token pages aren't cutting it anymore. I should have asked some folks in GenCon (Dennis was a big help with trading, Kudos).

I am looking for storage to hold each year's commons, uncommons and rares, in addition to something easily accessible other then the felt puches for consumables during the dungeon. I saw in previous posts that the Plano 3700 is an option - is that still relevant? What is your preferred mode of transportation to the Con (flight-wise) to get your tokens there? Also, what does everyone use in the dungeon?

Links appreciated! I'm very interested in what you folks are using these days and your recommendations.

Thanks all!

For home storage, I prefer poker chip cases, such as this one:

www.amazon.com/Trademark-1000-Capacity-Chip-Case/dp/B000B8GEI8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1379294435&sr=8-3&keywords=poker+chip+case

That particular one is awful big, and will be very heavy when full. The ones I use are about half that size. If you end up shopping for these, try to find ones with no spaces in the middle for card decks - a waste of space for our purpose that you'll be cussing later. I also use plastic craft sorters (that I can't find a link to) for tokens that I rarely dig through - the cases are less than $5 on sale, but would definitely not stand up to the slightest drop.

I brought one 300 chip case to the con with 'tradeables' plus one other with my builds and preferred consumables. Very heavy if you're flying, and would pretty much be your entire carry-on allotment.

In the dungeon I use the token sash that I designed, or this year I used a vest that I added a bunch of pockets to. Many people make token pages in 3 ring binders work just fine, especially if you add the small bags with various consumables and stuff them in your pockets.

To try to keep the tokens from taking over the house, Shelly got me this awesome six-drawer rolling tool chest:

And the tokens are stored differently depending on their destiny. The sets I'm collecting are stored are in clear coin tubes with labels:

Some of the ones I have for trade are in poker chip cases, or this neat craft boxes:

and those destined for transmuting are just tossed into plastic trays awaiting their trip back to Carbondale:

I have a few tokens (some people who know me are probably falling off their chair at this understatement - LOL).

I also outfit a team of 10 for several dungeon runs.

So,

I looked for something relatively inexpensive, and decided on two methods for storing tokens at home:
1) 25 chip clear acrylic poker tubes (I got them for 50 cents apiece)
2) 100 chip acrylic poker trays (actually for some reason TD tokens are slightly thicker than regular poker chips so (in most cases) only 95 will fit)

Then I store these in boxes by year and rarity. The clear tubes make it really easy to find a particular tokens as I try to keep at least 25 of each token, though I don't always get 25 rares of a particular token. For consumables (that I use and have a lot of - more than 50) I put these into the 100 count trays.

For Gencon, I bring a folder (using the TD 20 token pages) for each player. Each folder has 3 - 7 pages in it. Make sure you tape (I use packing tape) the tokens that you don't need to pull out - most equipment other than weapons and consummables. Even if you put consummables in the top row, make sure you put (at least) a little tape on them, otherwise they fall out very easily. Other rows don't have this problem as they have a row of tokens blocking their escape (LOL).

These 10 folders go into large carryon bag (the biggest that would fit in an overhead bin) with wheels (a must). In addition I put in a couple of large token bags full of minor cures, and ranged weapon ammo (I separate sling bullets from arrows - as bows and slings are all I equip my characters with). Also, small baggies of tokens that get turned into the coach (runestones) labelled for each dungeon I plan to run.

For trading at GenCon, I usually don't have time for it, so I don't have good suggestion here.

I use a Dansco coin album for my preferred class. It will hold 45 tokens in the 5 page version, which is enough for me. The tokens will not fall out and it fits easily into a messenger bag. I use the Plano boxes with the moveable dividers for the stuff I am collecting to turn into trade tokens and a 3 ring binder with a zipper closure for the tokens I want to bring for trade.

I don't have to worry about flying to Gen Con, so you may find these methods aren't as useful. I have read several other forumites suggestions when it comes to flying, and the poker chip cases seem to work well for peopel with a lot to trade. They also suggest keep some tokens out so you can show the security people what you have in the case, which may save you from having them rifle through your stuff.

Dansco Albums on Ebay

I purchased the 7 page Dansco album with 7 pages of 41 mm storage spots before this latest GenCon. I can tell you that it was so nice not having to worry about losing my most valuable tokens due to something slipping out of a lesser storage container. The 7 page book gets a bit heavy when fully loaded, but it was the best "per page" value when I was putting in my order.

Previous discussions on here indicated that the 40 mm or 41 mm pages will hold the tokens, with the 40 mm being a bit snug. I went the the 41 mm and thought it worked great. The only thing I am concerned about at this point is the long term use of the album and the pages beginning to separate. The tokens are just a bit fatter than the pages are designed to hold. So I don't know if there is going to be any long term concerns from that.

i use the 40mm whitman coin pages ( link - the image shows only 9 slots but that is a mistake, there are actually 12 slots per page) along with the whitman coin binder ( link )

i can fit 6 pages in a binder for a total of 72 tokens per binder. they are very secure and a great solution for keeping valuable tokens from falling out.

h/t to haasdt for turning me on to these
