TOPIC: Token Management

Token Management 11 years 10 months ago #1

A conversation came up while I was in Indy for the TEP. The topic was about what merchandise might be good for True Dungeon to offer. Something that I brought up was token management items.

We talked about a few things like the coin wallets and the coin books, token sashes, even TD courier bags. I find the coin book to be one of the est options as there is ZERO chance of losing a token from such a book.

The conversation was about more merchandise than just token management but I think that token management is a huge issue and TD could make quite a bit of cash if they had a sanctioned way for people to organize their tokens.

I know there are lots of ways people already use so let's make a list

1. Magnetic Wrist holders
2. Coin Wallets
3. Coin Books
4. Sashes
5. ?
6. ?

What else can we come up with?

An example of the Token (coin) Book. Each row is covered by a slide out strip of clear plastic, front and back. It would be VERY hard for a token to fall out.

Molda sells/used to sell some token dispensers. I'm also working on a briefcase like holing device that incorporates removable storage and locks. It also holds quite a bit more. I'm not sure how to share pictures but I'm also not done the internal design yet either...

I was thinking more of management centered around what to use during a TD run but any type of TM is good!

For a TD run the attributes needed would be protection first but the ability to show a DM you have a token in a very short period of time. I guess that would be accessibility.

I have used the multi-pouch belts in the past and they work quite well until you get so many tokens that you are scrambling to find the exact ones you are looking for.

What size coin is this holder for? It seems to be the perfect size.

The ones I use now are 41mm blank round pages from Dansco. The TD tokens are 40mm so it gives just a little play to the token so they are easy to pop in and out. The plastic slides into the page so the token is not going to fall out without removal of the plastic.

I tried 40mm and those work too but are VERY tight on the tokens so it would be difficult to remove a token if a DM wanted to inspect it for some reason. The one pictured is 40mm.

ive made some crappy looking, but decently effective necklace things. start with the token pages that TD sells, cut them to 3x3, duct tape back to back, run a sturdy cord through and wear around your neck. gives you 18 tokens easily displayed and a small piece of tape makes them secure. They just dont look pretty (all function), and unfortunately we already have a bunch of things hanging around our necks...but it is cheap and means you dont have to hold anything or dig for the tokens.

for myself and the two others i really equip well, i will have nicer stuff (like token wallets and sashes), but i am still keeping these for other friends i loan tokens to. so they dont just have a small pouch they have to dig into all the time to show tokens to the DM. not sure if it would be worth the effort for someone to come up with a nicer looking version of this.

I will attest to the security of the coin holders. I would also suggest the 41mm as well, as I use a 40 mm, and it is tough getting the coins in and out. Best item I have seen so far has been a light up wizard's staff with spots to pop tokens into. I had a sweet pair of leather bracers made with 3 slots on each, which I will use for my weapons and consumables.

I really appreciate this discussion as I have been looking for an improvement on the multi-pocket belt I have been using. Not super efficient (which pocket was healing and which one was scrolls?). I may have to step up to the wallet this year. as the book is nice and secure but looks like it might not hold enough consumables.

If you look at the picture you will see some draw string bags next to the book. The token book is only for tokens that do not get turned in or are rarely used. I do have my Ioun stone Violet Prism in the book. It would need to be removed for a punch if used.

The way I manage my character now is to put him in a Gen Con courier bag along with the pouches. Each pouch contains a different type of consumable. For my Paladin that would be Scrolls, Potions and Healing. Adding a bag for projectiles would not add significant time to a search either.

My weapons are where they always have resided, my front pocket. The book allows me to show a DM any token I am wearing in seconds and I spend less than 15 seconds trying to find any consumable that I need. The 1" binder allows for a comfortable 5 pages for a total of 45 tokens. More than enough for outfitting your character.

We also have a group book with just gear tokens from multiple years. This allows anyone to open that book and say, "Why YES I do have a grappling hook." This is just for items that can be shared by the group, rope, spikes, hammers, etc. Mirrors and scroll tubes and such go in the character book.

The great thing about using the courier bag and the pouches is that you have a total of 4 items to search and they are all color coded (or in the case of the book, unique!). It never took me more than 10 or 15 seconds to find what I was looking for. It was also MUCH easier to use than the multi-pouch belt. The belt gets really cumbersome the more tokens you have.

I do have to say that the belt was a godsend when I first got it (Thanks to a good friend!) because I had no token management at all going on before that. It just becomes awkward as you get more and more advanced.

I am absolutely enamoured with the token sleeves Molda made. I have one now that I used last year and he is producing a few more for me. I will post a pic later. You load in the tokens (scrolls in my case- it fits about 50) and slap the end and one will pop out enough for you to remove it. There is a loop for belt attachment too.
