TOPIC: Gearing Up Newbies

Re: Gearing Up Newbies 14 years 1 month ago #13
Hi - I'm the person that makes "Wookie Bandoliers" although I've never heard them described that way... I recommend putting into the sashes (as I call them) stuff that you don't change/take out at all, if ever, such as armor, ioun stones, jewelry, etc. Contact me if you want to hear more about them, or I know Molda makes a great token wallet too.

binia

In addition to the other token-holding suggestions, I had great success with a Tool Band-It . (you can also get them at Amazon )

Granted, it may be a little much for a first time player, but I figured I'd mention it because of how much I liked mine.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .
Don't we have a "Widows and Orphans of Greyhawk" box for donating tokens?

I have never seen it. I always carry extra with me when I am coaching and just give them out as needed.

Yay! binia's bandoleers are single-handedly the greatest thing E V E R! :hello2:
Nothing beats striding into a dungeon with all your gear at your fingertips, unless its looking awesome doing it!

I learned the hard way, and I'm taking a much more minimalist approach with tokens these days. I've got binia's bandoleer with consumables and handy adventuring gear (rope, etc) and a token tote around my neck with permanents that only need to come out once during check-in. In one pants pocket, I carry one small ziplock baggy for healing potions in my pocket. In my back pocket there is a single empty ziplock for anything found in the dungeon, just so tokens don't get mixed in someplace they shouldn't be (this is a hold over from the treasure boxes that used to be found in the dungeon, I suppose).

In the past, I tried carrying far too much, and just confused myself during the adrenaline rush. Much better for me to spend the time to investigating the dungeon, rather than frantically sorting looking for a token.
Thanks, WaterSomePlants! *blush*

How about a bandolier for incidentals, Molda's wallet for stuff that you NEED to find if you need it (cure poisons, etc), a Tool-Band-It for your weapon, and a token tote for the stack of healing? And maybe a second one for ammo? You'd be one PREPARED PARTIER!

could we, the token community, make a box and drop off tokens that the coaches could use to outfit newbies?

Why, the creme de la creme, of course!
They're Gary's Token Tote v1(?)- worn around the neck and lovingly made with folding pockets.

Last time I saw anything like this was henwy's give-a-token-take-a-token box, but that may have been a few years ago. The idea of a donation box under the watchful eye of the coaches is a great thought.

Say, do the coaches usually run out of give aways?

I think the usual donation station, is out at the admin table OR a coach could perhaps take donation tokens and throw them in the pool box at the back of the room...

The problem with donations is event consistency...if all of a sudden 20 rares pop up at one coaches table, and the one next to it has only greens given ...then they get a bad impression.

I suggest for consistency - we say donations should be made to Jeff/Dave in the off season AND/OR make donations at the admin table. so they can go into circulation evenly and fairly. (Or we don't encourge donations...Or we ask that you visit Henwy's box instead.)

I do not suggest that a coach bring a private stash to give away as they please. This really makes it bad for the next coach that serves folks from that same group - IF they should run again and expect similar treatment.

A good rule of thumb is (Jeff correct me if I am out of line) - if you can repeat it for every customer it might be OK if Jeff says so - but if you can't make it happen for all it really needs to be approved. (This goes for treasure seeding in the dungeon, etc.)

I grew sorta disillusioned after I couldn't find one of those funnels for less than $700. I really wanted to have one of those as the new give a token/take a token.

Really though, the economics of token donation have changed with the whatevertheheckthey'recalled, the bulk tokens. Things that people would happily donate because they had little use for someone with a bunch of them and would help out a newbie, now has at least some value as a bulk tradein. God know the box already bled tokens pretty severely even in the best of times. I think it'd starve nowadays.
