Gearing Up Newbies 14 years 1 month ago #1

Hello,

I've been a lurker here for a while. I just experienced the GenCon registration system in all its glory and am signed up for a couple of runs with my three brothers for this year. We've never done TD before... and have ordered the 10pack of treasure to help us gear up for the event. Is there any advice about how much / which tokens are a good idea to bring along? Is there a sort of minimum level of equipment required to really get the best out of the adventure? Are there classes which are good for a group, but seldom chosen? I'm probably over-thinking this.

We signed up for non-nightmare runs... and we don't want to annoy any regular players by slowing them down, or coming unprepared...

Looking forward to GenCon this year. Any advice for newbies in regards to preparation we can do would be very welcome.

Paul

Paul send me a pm message. I can give you some extras at gencon. We can find a time to meet and I will donate some tokens to your group.

So you have 4 out of 8 tickets for the runs you are signed up for? If you are playing with more experienced players they'll get to choose their classes first since they'll be higher level. The tokens will definately help you out. The big thing to remember is the importance of team work. You have 12 minutes in each room and every second is important. As far as number of tokens go, the important thing is that no matter how many you bring that you can get to them quickly and easily. When you get your tokens, you might consider posting what you got and then people can give you an idea about your equipment.

The MONK is a nice token-lite class to play...if you can get at least PLATE armor...you can play a Fighter or maybe Paladin. The Barbarian is also a good first time class to play...semi-token light class. The real thing is - if you have a GREAT memory, you can try the Wizard or Cleric (good to have plate for Cleric.)

Take some time to check out some of the forum posts on how to MAX out char classes...and see what you have that comes close. A +1 purple armor is only 1 point better than a red regular armor...

In short - bring all your tokens...but have them organized...have each of your group carry potions and keep scrolls to "bribe" casters to use on you...

PM me as well and I will babble more...

I'll definitely post what we pull (is the term unwrap for Tokens?) to get some advice. Thanks for so many smart, fast replies. As for getting to the tokens quickly what do people use ...binder pages? ...Wookie Bandolier? ...I saw a nice leather wallet made by one of the TD community...

thanks again for advice!
-Paul
People use a variety of different items to carry their tokens through the dungeon. The big thing is to make sure that they are not only accessible but secure as well. There is no worse feeling than losing a token in the dungeon. Always know where your weapon token is. It should be the one thing that you can get to the easiest as you use it so much.
Yeah I like to gear up the members in my group now by gear up I mean rare’s as I have just started but it's always nice to see a new player become happy when he is like, This is all I have guys and Im like No no No that just wont do and pull out my stacks I rare’s I carry and gear him and anyone else up I can. It makes the run better and for younger kids it makes their day to think they are now using a magical axe instead of a normal club Etc.

I purchased a couple of the token wallets Molda makes. They each hold 24 tokens, and hold them securely when they are closed. I'd say definitely worth the price on e-Bay if you're planning on buying more tokens. If you're each just getting one 10-pack, then a good deep pocket is really all you need, however.

As the party wizard, I put all my tokens into binder pages in a binder made up to look like my spell book. :) It's organized into things I'm wearing, scrolls, potions, wands, and then gear. Works for me!

...although a Wookie bandolier would be totally sweet.
I am a player coach and I try to carry extra uncommon and common with me when I am doing the coaching. If I get new players I will give them some tokens to use.
I just try to make the experience the best it can be for the new people.

We're pretty well equipped party, and come kitted out before we sit down for registration. We usually use the time to help any new players get organized and equipped, often giving away most of the Free Token Packs to help new comers out. I usually keep a backup weapon or two (for fighting rust monsters, or stabbing myself when fighting stirges) which I can also give away.

So, don't be afraid to ask for help, even though everyone is really busy during check-in, players and GMs are usually very friendly!

(Plus, its a great feeling after the run to say "you just keep those tokens"- new folks seem really happy, and if it helps make their experience better, I'm all for it!)

Don't we have a "Widows and Orphans of Greyhawk" box for donating tokens?
