Final 2010 Token Proofs! 14 years 6 months ago #1

We are going to send these off on Friday. This is your "lastest" chance to find one of my screw-ups or offer a suggestion.

Also, we have the artwork for the 3 artifacts finished, and they look sweet. Instead of publishing them now, I think it would be cooler to wait until the actual tokens show up in about a month. I will post photos of them a week AFTER they are sent to their owners. I want them to get them maximum geek fun out of them.

We recently upgraded some of the Rare graphics (+1 Rapier, +2 Bolt, Ioun Stone Black Pearl, Otiluke's Freezing Orb, Rings and Wand of Magic Missile) and Ultra Rare graphics (+1 Rapier of Piercing, +2 Long Spear, +2 Staff of Power, Maul of the Titans, Orb of Might, Shield of Redemption) a bit.

And somebody will be happy about a certain UR Falchion...

www.truedungeon.com/email/common.jpg

www.truedungeon.com/email/uncommon.jpg

www.truedungeon.com/email/rare.jpg

www.truedungeon.com/email/ultrarare.jpg

Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks again for helping us make a great 2010 token set!

  • I think the +1 Hand Crossbow looks too red. Maybe just give the bow/string area the glow. Right now it looks like a +1 Hand Crossbow of Lava. :)
  •
• The+1 Elven Long Bow does not have a red glow.
  •
• The wording on the Fire/Frost/Sonic Resistance Rings feels weird to me—specifically the double use of the word "damage". Maybe something like "Wearer takes half damage from Fire/Frost/Sonic sources"?
  •
• I love the ice blue coloring on the +2 Light Crossbow of Frost, but it doesn't glow like other magical weapons.
  •
• Additionally, the following URs still don't have a glow effect:
• Bracers of Supreme Archery
    •
• Hat of Healing
    •
• Helm of Retribution
    •
• Monk's Belt
    •
• Plate Armor of Attack
• Shield of Redemption should say "+2 to AC" to be consistent with other current armor-bonus tokens.
  •
• The Orb of Might's swirl looks terrific!
  •
• I love the new starburst glow effects.

To what has been stated above I would only add:
100 Silver Pieces -- there are only 98 silver pieces in this picture
Turkey Leg -- this is missing its damage wheel

Just kidding! I think the tokens look great, and I can't wait to get some!

Looking great overall!

- Glad to see the Falchion of Throwing bumped up to +2. Even though it's an item that doesn't appeal to me personally, the reason I was so passionate about getting it to +2 was solely for balance purposes. At least now it's more competitive with other Purple two-handed weapons.

- Love the new pictures, especially the sparkle from the weapons. The +1 Rapier and +1 Rapier of Piercing look particularly marvelous! I'm also really liking the new Orb of Power and Black Pearl pictures.

- I do agree with Druegar about his comments regarding the pictures for +1 Hand Crossbow and +2 Light Crossbow of Frost.

- I'm still not quite sure why the Runestone Fitting unnecessarily limits it to just Rare runestones. Could be an issue later down the line.

- Only template issue I saw is that Amulet of Mugwort uses "hit points" while Half Plate of Life uses "hit pts"

Spectacular work! Thanks for the time and effort you put in Jeff! =D

Changing the Maul to need a STR 24 seems kinda high. That's going to require some very specific prerequisite gear to use.

Would be cooler if they left off the class restriction and just said anyone with a 24str could use it :O but the increasing to 24 str was bit of a suprise.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!

Agreed. Maul of the Titans should be usable by any class that can use blunt metal weapons (see Hammer of Thunderbolts) if you're bumping the Strength requirement to 24. At an absolute minimum, Paladins should be able to use the MotT because Paladins can use other mauls from this very set.
Agreed. Maul of the Titans should be usable by any class that can use blunt metal weapons (see Hammer of Thunderbolts) if you're bumping the Strength requirement to 24. At an absolute minimum, Paladins should be able to use the MotT because Paladins can use other mauls from this very set.

I think class restrictions should still apply. If the Cleric and Ranger can't use a Great Club or normal Maul, I don't see why they should be able to use the Maul of the Titans. Plus, with the growing number of STR bonuses out there, it's actually quite do-able. (Girdle of Hill Giant Strength + Mithral Gauntlets + Amulet of the Oak + Potion of Bull's Strength is +13 STR. There's also a good chance that many of the classes will get a +1 STR bump due to the Belt of Ogre Power. So getting to 24 is more feasible now). So the Maul of the Titans should definitely be Barbarian, Fighter, and maybe Paladin only.

Regarding the Paladin, I'm fine either way. The main argument to keeping it Barbarian and Fighter only is that it makes those classes more distinct (by giving them special access to weapons). The Paladin can't use the Bastard Sword or Weighted Net either. And though he can use the Heavy Crossbow, he's barred from the Heavy Repeating Crossbow. As another analogy, the Ranger is allowed to use the normal Rapier and +1 Rapier, but can't use the +1 Rapier of Piercing. But it's not the end of the world if the Paladin can use the Maul (his Holy Greatsword is probably better). But in terms of flavor, I think it makes more sense to leave the Titan Maul to the classes that really focus on STRENGTH - the Fighter and Barbarian.

I was okay with the 20 STR requirement, but the 24 STR is also okay, especially given the power creep in Strength boosting items. Right now we have:

Girdle of Hill Giant Strength (+3) / Belt of Ogre Power (+2)
Mithral Gauntlets (+4) / Gauntlets of Ogre Power (+2)
Amulet of the Oak (+2)
Potion of Bull's Strength (+4) / Potion of Yew Bark Extract (+2)

With just Reds (and lower), you can already come up with a permanent +6 STR (+10 when using the Potion). Right now the Barbarian has 15 STR and the Fighter has 14 STR. So either can use the Maul without any other purples (if using a potion).

With Purples, you can a permanent +9 STR (+13 with the Potion), allowing the Barbarian to always use the Maul and the Fighter still needs to consume a Potion.

So 20 might be a little too easy to reach, but 24 does seem a bit challenging. Maybe something in between (22?) might be better?

The other factors to consider are: #1. Will the character sheets change (and specifically STR scores which many believe will be bumped up) and #2. Will there be many future tokens that increase STR? In these cases, I'll have to defer to Jeff so I'll trust that he knows what he's doing when deciding on the details for the Maul of the Titans.
Expecting a player to use a consumable (strength potion) just so they can use their weapon is crazy. Once a fight starts you'll have to burn a round just getting ready to use your weapon (because you certainly won't have a Belt of Retrieval).
