TOPIC: Newbie Questions about Tokens?

Newbie Questions about Tokens? 14 years 7 months ago #1

Been reading the treasure token guide and have a bunch of questions about the usefulness of certain tokens:

1) On the Bone Scroll Case and Alchemists Pouch protecting Scrolls and Potions, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used?

2) On the Boots of the Leopard giving half-damage from Mechanical Traps, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used? Seems like most traps were magic or poison (or push damage, which I presume you can't resist?)

3) Potion of Water Breathing, was there ever an underwater encounter where this was used? I would also presume the Ioun Stone of Iridescent Spindle would work for water breathing as well?

4) The Guide mentions Ioun Stones being destroyed. Has this ever actually happened?

5) Is the Feedback loop a charged item that can only be used twice? Appears to have 2 consumable circles on it.

6) The ring of feather falling, has this ever been used in an adventure?

3) Potion of Water Breathing, was there ever an underwater encounter where this was used? I would also presume the Ioun Stone of Iridescent Spindle would work for water breathing as well?

Yes, kind of & Yes
2008 had a room with a small body of water. If you looked at it, the DM told you you saw something shiny at the bottom. You could use the PoWB or the Ioun stone to safely dive down and get it. If you did, you got a random token.

5) Is the Feedback loop a charged item that can only be used twice? Appears to have 2 consumable circles on it.

Yes. But only this year did DMs have a way of permanently marking a multi-use consumable token.

6) The ring of feather falling, has this ever been used in an adventure?

I believe there was a bridge over a deep chasm in year one which you could fall down. (It's been a while and my mind is hazy.) I believe you could survive the fall with the ring, but I don't recall if there was a way to get back up. This year's Retro Dungeon had a bridge, but I'm not sure if a player could fall off it. I do know it was possible to get the monster in that room to fall down the chasm though.

This is pure speculation on may part and I have absolutely no foreknowledge of anything Jeff has secretly planned, but because there is a rare cloak with the same effect as a Feather Fall ring, I wonder if the dragon may pick up players, fly them high into the air, then drop them—thus making "floaties" a handy item in 2010.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

1) On the Bone Scroll Case and Alchemists Pouch protecting Scrolls and Potions, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used?

In the past I believe there were traps that could damage items carried by a player, but it was rare and only if you REALLY messed up. That might be a normal/nightmare difference.

2) On the Boots of the Leopard giving half-damage from Mechanical Traps, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used? Seems like most traps were magic or poison (or push damage, which I presume you can't resist?)

I have never had a case where the DM allowed half damage from a trap when these were worn. I have always gotten the "Its a magical trap" excuse.

4) The Guide mentions Ioun Stones being destroyed. Has this ever actually happened?

Not in any of my groups. Anyone else?

6) The ring of feather falling, has this ever been used in an adventure?

There have been plenty of pit traps in the past, but I have heard reports of some DMs claiming a pit is bottomless, where others just said it was really, really deep. Again, maybe it is a normal/nightmare thing.

You are thinking of the Genie encounter a few years back. I don't remember which year it was, exactly (2004?). I was told a FF ring would work, but the pit was bottomless so you would just fall at a really slow rate until you died of old age, etc.

Feel free to ask anything else.

there was a chasm in 2004 too. it had winds that could blow you off. our group used 50 ft rope to tie ourselves together and ended up flying the rogue like a kite, which we enthusiastically pantomimed. classic td moment . deep chasms are a recurring obstacle, which makes featherfall a nice safety blanket.

This was the pit that my party was told was bottomless, but I think I heard other parties were able to climb down one side, cross the pit, and climb up the other. Can anyone confirm this, or am I on something?
If you were petrified by a medusa and you had a scroll of stone to flesh, another player could only retrieve it from you if you had the Scroll Case. I saw that one happen.
4) The Guide mentions Ioun Stones being destroyed. Has this ever actually happened?

Not in any of my groups. Anyone else?

One of the ioun stones is charged (violet, I think). You use it to absorb the damage from a spell, which uses a charge. After all your charges are used, the token is taken away (destroyed).

Been reading the treasure token guide and have a bunch of questions about the usefulness of certain tokens:

1) On the Bone Scroll Case and Alchemists Pouch protecting Scrolls and Potions, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used?

3) Potion of Water Breathing, was there ever an underwater encounter where this was used? I would also presume the Ioun Stone of Iridescent Spindle would work for water breathing as well?

The Stirge battle has been mentioned.

In 2008 GenCon, the first room had a pool of water. If you searched with water-breathing capability, you could (sometimes but not always) get extra treasure.

In addition, when you were subsequently attacked by Stirges, you could jump in the water and drown your Stirge if you had the right equipment (though you'd still take a round of damage).

At Director's Cut in True Realm, there was no treasure for going underwater, but there was actually a little passageway to a clue (still don't know what the relevance of the clue was).

This would have been an ideal opportunity to also require the use of the Bone Scroll Case (ruined scrolls would have saved many a Stirge from death by Chain Lightning) but alas that was not implemented.

2) On the Boots of the Leopard giving half-damage from Mechanical Traps, has there ever been a situation in a True Dungeon adventure where these have been used? Seems like most traps were magic or poison (or push damage, which I presume you can't resist?)

I've never gotten it to work. I've always been told that it's "magic trap" damage as well.

6) The ring of feather falling, has this ever been used in an adventure?

During GenCon 2008, there was a bridge along a chasm. Halfway along the bridge, you'd have to fight a Mind Flayer. Only one person could engage the Mind Flayer at a time (everyone else had to use missile weapons). One player could jump into the pit (using Feather Fall) and climb to the other side, which would allow a second player to also attack with melee weapons.

the bone scroll tube was one of the items you could actually use to solve the Dome riddle ('08 room 3 gencon) not needed, but it was a useful weight if you had only the twine token.
4) The Guide mentions Ioun Stones being destroyed. Has this ever actually happened?

Not in any of my groups. Anyone else?

Not, yet but there is always a possibility. In this case destroyed would mean not being able to use for the rest of the adventure. Generally, if a token is normally a perminant one we would not ask that it be turned in. However there could be cases where a token is required to be surrendered, this would be where a player decides on a unique solution to a problem, and a token is used in a way that would destroy it. So lest use armor for example, where some action taken volunteerily by the player (e.g., I float my shield in a pit of acid to protect me as I reach across to retrieve...) would indeed ruin a real item, in that case the DM will warn the player, "OK, but doing so will destroy the item and it must be turned in to me" the player would have to choose to use it in that way and thus loose it, or not perform the action and keep the token.

As a different example, we would not have (unless Jeff changes his mind) a case where a player walks into a missile trap, where the missiles have been enchanted to home in on Iuon Stones, shattering them and destroying them, please turn them in... Now the scenario might happen that way, but the player would not be asked to turn in said Iuon Stones, rather the party card would be marked to indicate the loss of their use.

Now, you could also enter a room full of ravens who like to swoop down and grab shiny things...

Speaking of Chasm and Feather Fall, in 04', there was a chasm with a bridge in a 'very windy room'. There was a small ledge some distance away(too far to jump to).
To cross the players had to crawl along the bridge to keep from getting knocked over and blown off the bridge(no railing).

One creative group, used ropes(tokens) to tie around the Rogues waist and have plenty of length. Cast feather fall on her. Had the Fighter 'toss' her in the air, and Kited her over to the little ledge to retrieve the token on it. And then used the rope to haul her back. They stayed back off the bridge where they were not in the draft and likely to get knocked over.
