Would it be possible to design the Inbox like the Outbox is designed, so that the unread messages are always at the top of the list? That would be REALLY helpful, as I sometimes have to sort through dozens of pages of messages to find the one or two I left as unopened because they were still active or awaiting action.

The ability to receive an email alert when a PM arrives would also be helpful.

I've decided that's why people subscribe to their threads. Then when some posts "PM sent" you can at least get an alert that way... if they post.

It would be helpful if there were other search options. In addition to an "unread" filter, if we could sort or filter by date, sender and keywords... but that may be a lot of custom work for what may just be a plugin.

That is the exact reason I subscribe to threads. It's frustrating that you can't get an email notification of PM received but you can get email notification that someone posted a note on a thread written by someone else...
