TOPIC: 2013 XP desk suggestion

2013 XP desk suggestion 10 years 8 months ago #1

So I know this year was a bit rough at the XP desk and I would like to offer what I see is a great way to handle the account updating.

The GenCon badge (Ruby) number was taken down this year, which is very helpful, but I think that if we could get the data string from the barcode, and parse out the Ruby Number, and use that plus use scan codes for the difficulty/run, and the room you got to, then it would take 3 barcode scans, plus a button press or two to enter a person into the system.

Only 2 scans. 1 to check for their account, and should that fail one to create their account. There would be a problem for the walk up 1 day's though as they don't have a Ruby #.

Personally I'd say we should just issue our own scan codes for the regulars and leave the Gencon badge #'s as just identification to pick up our xp card at check in.

We have made that suggestion in the volunteer forums. I worked the XP desk this year and a few of us added some other suggestions to make things go more smoothly.

I want to thank everyone that ran the XP desk. With the system being in such a FUBAR state it must have been hell. Hopefully things will be fixed next year.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

I want to second this. Although there were problems with the XP desk, I never once witnessed the volunteers showing too much frustration or getting unprofessional in what had to be a frustrating situation.

I agree with the comments on using bar coding where helpful and possible. I actually made a similar suggestion under another topic. I think using the coaching rooms ahead of time for any information capturing and data entering would be good and then perhaps linking that info to a bar code if possible would make the end game that much faster.

Additionally with the extra time that you have in the coaching area you could verify email addresses/names etc. to ensure you have it down right. We could even use tablets/laptops/etc. to capture what we can electronically.

Yes I want to say that even though it was a mess back there, the people running it were really great and helpful. I'm glad I could help a few times with counting up treasure token totals and for that late night when all those completion tokens fell, Sean and I got down and helped clean them up. I was nice to help out wherever I could to make things easier on the people running it :)

I look foward to next year and hope we can get some improvements in the system to make things easier for the volenteers back there!
