TOPIC: Rogue box treasures

Rogue box treasures 11 years 7 months ago #1

Having never played a Rogue before, I really don't know what sorts of treasures are in the box. But looking at the UR tool that gives 3 pulls from each box, I can see that might be a very tempting token to pick up. Can some of the Rogues fill me in on what sort of things you usually pull from the boxes?
Thanks.

It has changed over the years, and may change again, but here's my experience:

Originally, the Rogue Chest was stocked just like the treasure generators, and with roughly the same mix of common/UC/rare with the occasional UR.

Then, when TD changed to treasure stamps and "empty" rogue boxes to combat those individuals who helped themselves to more than their allotment of tokens, the DMs started handing out Rogue box treasure themselves. Since then, I think the overall treasure quality has gone down.

Some DMs in Rogue box rooms have gone halfway thru their shift before getting any treasure to hand out, so they've improvised with random commons. Others have stocked Rogue boxes with the healing tokens which players handed them in the room (that year I pulled a lot of healing potions, healing scrolls, and even an Elixir of Life). Generally, the token pulls are in the common - uncommon range, though.

In the last 2 years, my pulls have gone something like this:

common
common
common
uncommon
common
common
rare
common
common
common
common
uncommon
common
common
uncommon

I miss the days when you could find combos and URs in the Rogue boxes... but I understand why they don't stock the boxes with them anymore.

The distribution really is like that of a normal pack. So even getting a rare is, well, a relatively rare occurrance. It's clear that they're not stocked from the same supply as the treasure gens. I just assumed they emptied pre-made 10-packs into the boxes.

The Rogue boxes must be better than a random pack distribution.

As it is, there is practically zero reason for the rogue to pick the treasure over the clue. Isn't that the whole point of rogue treasure, to make for an intriguing decision?

The rogue box should give a treasure chip instead of a token...

I disagree Paul. I ran two sealed runs with my group and we needed tokens to help in the dungeon. Of course we pull rune stones every time. Lol

If not a treasure chip, maybe map fragments and a shot at a whole map? All I got last year from 6 Rogue Boxes were common weapons from 2012.

Too True.

Out of three runs this year, I pulled one Rare (some GP).

It would be a misconception to getting into the roguish lifestyle because of an expectation of wonderful treasures pulls from the boxes. Don't get me wrong, it is alot of fun working the boxes, but the pulls, well, I'd say they're significantly worse than random pack distribution.
