Note About Experience Points

Experience Points gained during the 2018-2019 adventuring season can be earned only once from each of these three new Norse (N-series) adventures regardless of where they are played. For example, a player will only get XP credit for the furthest room they reach during multiple runs of the N1 module even if they play N1 at more than one convention.

Thank you for your amazing support of our event over the past 15 years. Your funding has allowed us to continually enhance the quality of True Dungeon, and we look forward to the big leap in immersiveness we will see this coming adventuring season.

True Dungeon is back in 2019 at PAX South where we will offer two completely different adventures:  N1 - Astral Journey to the Bliss and N2 - Odin's Haven.  Both of these adventures have been tweaked since they were seen at Gen Con in August, so they will be two very exciting adventures.  They may be played in any order. 

All the events take place on the 3rd floor inside the Stars At Night Ballroom at the Heny B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio, TX.  We will be running a FREE 24-minute demo (with standard queue line) and the aforementioned two-hour adventures.  There is no waiting line for the two-hour adventure, as your e-ticket will have an exact start time.  Be sure to show up 10 minutes early for your two-hour adventure, and don't be late.  The adventure will have to start without you.  

Tickets will go on sale at Noon CST at Sunday, November 18th, 2018.   Please check back in November for the web location to buy these tickets online. Each ticket comes complete with a free pack of 10 Treasure Tokens, one PAX South exclusive Participation Token (see below), and 3 draws from our random treasure generators.  One person will be able to buy all 10 tickets in a time slot if desired.  The cost of each ticket is $58.

True Dungeon 2018 will be hosted at the 51st Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN from August 2nd – August 5th (Thursday-Sunday), 2018.  Gen Con Indy is the world's oldest and largest game convention, and True Dungeon is its most fan-favorite event.  We premeire our adventuring season at Gen Con, and we present our most detailed adventure sets here.  

You must obtain a 1-Day or 4-Day convention Badge either by purchasing one or earning one through volunteering.  Badges go one sale Jan. 14th, 2018 at www.gencon.com (which you must have to buy tickets).

In its 16th year, this is the premier True Dungeon experience where the 2017-2018 season starts!  We will present four two-hour adventures (both combat & puzzle versions of "Odin's Haven" and "Vault of the All-Father") in a 44,000 sq. ft. exhibit hall inside Lucas Oil Stadium.  We put on an incredible show here, and you don't want to miss it.

True Dungeon Located In Lucas Oil Stadium

We moved from the Indiana Convenion Center in 2016 to the adjacent state-of-the-art exhibit hall inside Lucas Oil Stadium.   Easy access to the TD event is gained through a well-lit underground corridor that connects the convention center to LOS.  Additionally, now that Gen Con is renting out the entire stadium, you can access TD's location from the football field.   CLICK HERE to see TD's location.

2018 Event Details

The 2018 event is the exciting second year of a four-year story arc that will take players on an amazing chase through some immersive environments as they seek to stop a vile brain slayer from collecting a set of holy relics known as the Teeth of Cavadar.  

True Adventures, Ltd. is proud to offer FOUR completely new two-hour  adventures for 2018.  

Odin's Haven

We are excited to advance our 4-year story-arc to Year Three as the party of adventurers travel to a good-aligned Outer Plane in seach of their foe.  In this 1st part of this year’s two-part adventure ("Odin's Haven"), players will reach the outer edge of the Bliss - a haven for the souls of armorers and weaponsmiths who must proven their mettle to join Odin's Hall of Smiths.  Players must work together while facing team-oriented challenges and fearsome monsters.  A 2nd adventure ("The Vault of the All-Father") is also offered as a sequel to the first adventure where players will seek to locate their foe within Odin's Hall of Smiths. For maximum fun, play both! This year marks the third year of an epic four-year story arc in which the party must stop a Brain Slayer from hatching a devious scheme to collect all the Teeth of Cavadar. Players get a free bag of 10 Treasure Tokens ($8 value), at least three draws from the Random Treasure Generator Chest and a collectible limited-edition token.  


Vault of the All-Father

In this 2nd part of this year’s two-part adventure, players will join Odin's host of armorers and weaponsmiths within the Hall of Smiths to bring a end to the mad schemes of a vile Brain Slayer.  Players must work together while facing puzzles and frightening creatures.  A 2nd adventure "Odin's Haven" is also offered as a prequel to this adventure. For maximum fun, play both! This year marks the third year of an epic four-year story arc in which the party must stop a Brain Slayer from hatching a scheme to collect all the Teeth of Cavadar. Players get a free bag of 10 Treasure Tokens ($8 value), at least three draws from the Random Treasure Generator Chest & a collectible limited-edition token.

Both of these adventures are presented in two different formats (for a total of four different events).  Each adventure is available in a "combat-oriented" or "puzzle-oriented" version, so one possible event title will be "Odin's Haven (puzzle-oriented)".  Combat-oriented adventures have more rooms with monsters to fight, while puzzle-oriented modules present more puzzles to solve.  It ends up being that each version of the one adventure has two different rooms than the other.

The cost of each ticket is $62.  This admission covers your two-hour adventure, and it provides you with a FREE velveteen drawstring pouch of 10 Treasure Tokens ($8 value), at least three draws from the Random Treasure Generator Chest (super-rare tokens can be had!) & a collectible limited-edition token that only players receive.

 

Another Fun Event

True Grind:   In this hackfest, players must race a series of deadly combats that will test even the most experienced and well-equipped party.  No XP is earned, but 1 Treasure Chip and a Survivor Button is available. You MUST be a Second Level TD player to participate -- and expect to die without a lot of experience, skill and tokens. This is not an event for casual TD players.  The cost of this event is $30.

 

FOUR Levels of Challenge

Due to the response from our players, we make our adventures playable at different challenge levels.  Here they are in order of difficulty.

Non-lethal: If all players in the group agree, the party can tell their Coach they want to play their adventure on the "non-lethal" challenge rating. This is designed for people who just want to enjoy the True Dungeon adventure without having to worry about their character dying. Awarded XP for this challenge level is 650 XP

Normal: By default, the party will play their adventure on the Normal challenge level -- characters can die on this difficulty, but a good party can emerge victorious with only basic equipment as long as they work well together and think on their feet. If this challenge is too much (or insufficient) then other levels are available. Awarded XP for this challenge level is 650 + 50/room reached.

Hardcore:  If all players in the group agree, the players can tell their Coach they want to play their adventure on the "Hardore" challenge rating. This is for people who have some TD experience and at least 3 bags of tokens. Awarded XP for this challenge level is 1650 + 50/room reached.  They get only the Hardcore/Nightmare Completion token for attempting this level.

Nightmare: If all players in the group agree, the players can tell their Coach they want to play their adventure on the "Nightmare" challenge rating. This is for people who have lots of experience, moxie and/or tokens. THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT EVENT.  Awarded XP for this challenge level is 1650 + 50/room reached.  They get both the Normal and Hardcore/Nightmare Completion tokens for attempting this level.

 

Experience Points Earned

Players receive Experience Points (XP) for playing TD adventures and gain various benefits for achieving higher levels. Some TD veterans are now 8th level. The amount of XP earned is based on the challenge rating of the adventure as well as how many rooms your character makes it to alive. (Your character need notsurvive the entire adventure to get max XP, s/he just needs to enter the final room alive.)

Non-lethal = 650 XP
Normal = 650 XP + 50 XP/room
Hardcore= 1650 XP + 50 XP/room
Nightmare = 1650 XP + 50 XP/room
 
If a player plays the same adventure more than once, they receive the highest XP earned in all runs of that particular adventure. So someone playing an adventure twice, once at the Normal level and once on Nightmare level, will receive only the XP for the Nightmare adventure. (I.e., the XP awards for the same adventure don’t stack.) Note that the two versions (puzzle or comabt) of each adventure are considered the same adventure because they are somewhat similar. The highest XP available for Gen Con Indy 2018 is 4,000 XP – if the player makes it to the final room of two different adventures on Hardcore or Nightmare difficulty.

Participation Tokens

As stated earlier, players earn a cool limited edition participation token just for playing a TD adventure. There are FIVE unique tokens available at Gen Con 2018. The two versions of both modules have the same participation token, and the Hardcore/Nightmare version of both modules have their own special participation tokens.  True Grind has its own unique limited-edition Participation Token.  For the two-hour adventures, anyone playing on the "Non-lethal" setting will receive the Normal participation token, but no Survival button can be earned.

To use the event tickets in June at Origins Game Fair, you must have bought a convention badge at the Origins website HERE.  But you can wait a few weeks to get your Origins badge as the servers are pretty busy now. We will check to make sure all players have Origins badges.  One person can buy all 10 tickets in a slot if they wish, so one person can get tickets for the whole group.  However, all players MUST have an Origins Game Fair badge when they make their adventuring run.

The Extra-Fun Conclusion to the 2017-2018 Adventuring Season  

We will be presenting ALL four adventures from Gen Con 2017 (both combat & puzzle versions of "The Moongate Maze" and "Dancing Among Stones") at Origins – but each will have a new room not seen at Gen Con swapped into the adventure.  Also, we have swapped out the four Participation Tokens from Gen Con with four brand new ones for Origins!  These Participation Tokens are given to every player at the end of their adventure as a thank you and a souvenir for their adventure.  See below.  Tickets are $48 each for these four events.

We are very excited to be working with best-selling author Patrick Rothfuss (Name of the Wind) at Origins to present two adventures based in his literary world.  One adventure ("The Moongate Maze") takes place inside the Fae where you will meet a character from Pat's world, and the second adventure ("Dancing Among Stones") is presented near the Waystone Inn where again you will meet someone from his books.  For the most fun, play both adventures!

 

The new Origins module (“N1 - Astral Journey to the Bliss”) will be premiering at Origins Game Fair 2018, and it will represent the first of three completely new N-series modules debuting in 2018. The other two N-series modules (“N2 – Odin’s Haven” and “N3 – Vault of the All-Father”) will premier at Gen Con 2018. The N-series is a group of three consecutive modules based around a Norse theme.“N1 – Astral Journey to the Bliss” (and the entire N-series) will mark a new era in True Dungeon history. Starting with the N1 module, all future True Dungeon adventures will be presented with a larger event footprint than ever before. The quality of the sets, props, costumes and animatronics will be at the level that was achieved with the “Dancing Among Stones” adventure presented at Gen Con 2017. The non-themed “holding areas” between rooms have been replaced with well-themed spaces designed to immerse players in the adventure while they await entry into the next room. The cost to play this two-hour adventure at Origins will be $58.

Other Fun

True Raid - The LoriGorgon - Teams of two 10-person parties must fight the deadliest creature ever to appear in TD history -- the LoriGorgon! These tickets will go on sale at the normal times with the adventure tickets. However, since there are a limited supply, most will get snatched up by Patrons and Adv. Guild members since they have early access to tickets. You will only be able to buy one ticket.

Token Transmuting Desk:  To save time and hassle with transmuting your 2018 tokens, we are offering a location where you can drop off tokens to be transmuted.  You can pick them up later at your convenience.  This is a great way to do multiple transmutations at no cost to you – in a short amount of time.  This service is open to any token collector.

This should make for an amazingly fun weekend – but it gets even better when we talk about exclusive Patron and Adventurers' Guild benefits.

Gen Con will see the presentation of the entire three-part N-series of enhanced modules.  They can be played in any order!

They include:

• N1 – Astral Journey to the Bliss [4 puzzle rooms, 3 combat rooms]
• N2 – Odin’s Haven   [3 puzzle rooms, 3 combat rooms & 1 "both" room]
• N3 – Vault of the All-Father   [4 puzzle rooms & 3 combat rooms]

The entire N-Series of modules will mark a new era in True Dungeon history!  

The 2018 N-series adventures will be presented with the largest footprint in the history of True Dungeon. Also, the quality of the sets, props, costumes and animatronics will be at a level never seen before.  The traditional non-themed “holding areas” between rooms will be replaced with well-themed spaces designed to immerse players in the adventure while they await entry into the next room.  Because we have an extra day of installation and a larger build crew at Gen Con, all three adventures presented at Gen Con will have the BEST look and feel of the year -- and not seen at any other convention we attend. The extra time will be used to add additional set and prop pieces – as well as fine-tune light, sound and special effect levels

Admission covers your enhanced two-hour adventure, and it provides you with a FREE velveteen drawstring pouch of 10 Treasure Tokens ($8 value), at least three draws from the Random Treasure Generator Chest (super-rare tokens can be had!) and a collectible limited-edition Treasure Token that only players can acquire.  The cost of each ticket is $78.

New Gen Con Event Designed for New Players!  

Into the Viper's Pit (Sealed Quest) is an immersive adventure where players must venture into a desert-themed snake temple to face some of the most beloved puzzles and monsters from TD's long history.   A full 2,000 tickets will be offered at $48.

In keeping with the "sealed" theme, and to keep the fun more light and new-player friendly, no outside Treasure Tokens can be used.  Parties can only use the tokens found in their free starter 10-packs of Treasure Tokens.  Additionally, the adventures can only be run on Non-lethal or Normal challenge settings, but normal XP is available for those who did not play the event in 2014.  All players will get three draws from a special random treasure generator, and every player will receive a limited-edition Completion Token.

 

Participation Tokens for Gen Con

As is the tradition, the Participation Tokens you can obtain by playing events at Gen Con will be kept secret until Gen Con.  This is always a fun surprise for players at the end of their adventures.  Every player will receive one of these free Participation Tokens at the end of their adventure.  Every adventure has a different token!

True Dungeon Riddle Reveal

Tickets for this 1.5 hour seminar can be obtain HERE.  This will be hosted by Jeff Martin and senior volunteers who will answer your questions about the adventures presented at Gen Con.  At the end of the seminar a handful of old props and other tidbits will be auctioned off with Treasure Token gold pieces being the currency.

For years I have dreamed of making uber-cool dungeons at Gen Con.  I mean really cool adventures.  Really, really cool dungeons that would transport players to another world for two hours.  We have steadily worked toward that goal for the past 15 years, but we have never gotten as close as I would like.  

If I could dream really big, TD at Gen Con in 2019 would just be two massive dungeons with tons of multiple paths, secret doors and bonus rooms. But the cost of the ticket would have to be sky-high. I know that is not practical, so I've long considered the idea of doing three dungeons as we announced last week.

A handful of things made me pull the trigger on this dream this year.

First, we did a preliminary test last year with the “Dancing Among Stones” adventure at Gen Con 2017.  We arranged it so some of the "curtained hallways" were replaced with nicely themed townscape areas.  We went overboard on that adventure -- both in terms of cost and time budgets, but I was so happy with the result. After 15 years of slowly growing TD I felt we had finally gotten to the place I first dreamed about in 2003 while conjuring up True Dungeon over pancakes with Peter Adkinson (co-owner of Gen Con). After Gen Con 2017 was over and the test rooms went so well, I knew with a little more space, budget, and time to build we could have made Dancing Among Stones an amazing experience if all the holding areas were themed.

Second, I visited Universal Orlando this past October, and went on tours of all their amazing haunts. I got to meet with their head honcho, and that visit really inspired me to raise the quality of the event. It re-affirmed my wish to completely blow folks' minds with their TD experience, but to do that I knew that I needed more space.

Third, I ain't no spring-chicken these days. I'm 53 and I'm starting to prioritize the fulfillment of dreams a wee bit more these days. We just signed a 5-year deal with Gen Con, and I want to make these coming 5 years amazing while my vigor remains to push the envelope on what we can do.

Fourth, we just hired Mike Naglee full-time to help take over some of the aspects of running TD so I can spend more time working on the more creative side. This hire will allow us to make the Astral module (N1) (premiering at Origins Game Fair in June) a brand new module -- instead of a "best of" adventure as originally announced.

Fifth, from a logistics stand-point, doing the same events from Gen Con at Gamehole Con, PAX South and other Cons just makes a lot of sense. In the past, we've had to do two weeks of work in the warehouse after each Con just to re-configure all the sets, props and costumes to match the new unique structure of the upcoming event. And, mistakes can be made...stuff got left behind or the wrong things were brought. With this change, after the upcoming Gen Con we will unload the trailers into the warehouse (each intact in its own space), and then very easily re-load them in an afternoon to go to Gamehole Con. We will have a few pallets of consumable supplies to re-load. So, if you multiply the two weeks' savings per Con, you can see that over a month of time will be saved this year in the warehouse. This is time we can spend making better sets and props.

Despite all these points, the plan just a few weeks ago was still to leave Gen Con as-is -- with 4 modules (2 different modules each with a combat and puzzle side) in 2018. It was not until a fateful trip last week that I decided to think about making the big move.

I took the kids (ages 11 & 16) to Orlando last month for a quick Spring Break trip to Disney and Universal. Lori had to take her elderly father out West for a visit, so we decided at the last second to hit Orlando.



So...there I was at Disney World.  I was standing in the middle of Main Street at the Magic Kingdom -- watching the throngs of people immensely enjoying themselves.  I thought back to Walt's crazy idea to open Disney World back in 1971. It might surprise you to learn that it was a huge financial gamble, and many "experts" thought his castle in the swamp would be a big fiasco. But he rolled the dice and followed his creative dream… and his initiative ended up being widely loved by generations of folks who need some "wonderment" in their life.  It was there on Main Street looking up at the castle, surrounded by people from across the globe, that I decided it might be finally time to go for it.  

When I got back to TD HQ, I put out some event structure ideas for discussion, and we talked about lots of scenarios. I finally asked the TD Team if they wanted to follow me on the crazy idea of going with 3 enhanced dungeons. They gave out some great Pro and Con feedback , but in the end we all felt that 3 enhanced adventures  was the way to go.

That decision was re-affirmed this week as we set to work on re-configuring the planned event for only three enhanced dungeons.  All that extra space will add so much fun to the adventures!  The spaces between rooms will now be adventure spaces themselves -- with clues and fun to be had while you wait.  We can't wait to see all those excited faces at Origins, Gen Con and beyond. I think you guys are in for a treat.

And yes...in case you are wondering...I am really worried that the new ticket price will be our undoing. I kept it as low as I could. Remember that we just hired Mike Naglee full-time and his talented wife Jenn part-time , so the smart and safe thing to do would probably have been to up the price from $62 to $66 and kept the 4 dungeon scheme. Heck, we even entertained the idea of adding a 5th dungeon, as it would have been possible to shoe-horn it in there with a slight decrease in overall event quality. I have to admit the extra $120,000 in revenue for a 5th adventure was tempting, but for lots of reasons that idea was abandoned.

If I've learned anything, it's that life is too short, so after 15 years of hard work I went with my dream. Let's hope it is not a castle in the swamp! 



Okay...then why did you add back an old 4th adventure?

Another good question.  We received lots of great feedback from our TD Community after we made the big announcement, and the number one concern voiced was the extra $16 added to the ticket price from 2017.  Many felt that TD would see a lot fewer new players trying out the event.  Additionally, many long-time players called for a way for them to still enjoy TD without the higher ticket price.  And finally, we realized that there would be some space savings due to the decrease in Coaching Rooms needed.

Being someone who likes creative challenges, I got to work trying to find room to present another (older style) adventure.  After playing around with possible map ideas, I called up the always friendly and passionate CEO of Gen Con (David Hoppe), and we worked together to re-configure the "swing space" exit corridor.  David was good enough to allow us to move the entire Epilogue area into the swing space -- which we will lightly theme for your exiting fun.  

This gained space (along with the extra space from fewer Coaching Rooms) allows us to present the fan-favorite "Into the Viper's" module from 2014 at the low ticket price of $48.  The adventure will have curtained "holding areas" between rooms and a smaller footprint than the N-Series modules, but it should still be a hoot to play for folks.  More info HERE.
