Hi all! With quite a few True Dungeon players being D&D players and True Dungeon being based on 3.5/Pathfinder rules, it occurred to me that there might be NASCRAG (National Association of Seriously Crazed Gamers) players as well (Nascrag uses 3.5/Pathfinder-lite rules).

For those who don't know what NASCRAG is, I'll put in a quick plug for them. It's a long-standing (40 years running at GenCon so far) D&D game using 3.5 rules - heavy on humor and having fun - lighter on power-gaming or deadly serious environments. They have 30-40 tables of teams in 2-4 waves who are competing to be selected for the final round on Saturday night. Something like 20 or 40 teams of 6 get to play in the Saturday night game. Within the games, you are trying to complete the missions, solve the puzzles, and have a good time doing it. Judging is based on how well you play your pre-gen characters assigned to you, completing missions, and how much fun it is be at that table. Needless to say, it is more important to have a good time than it is to win anything.

My gaming group entered on a lark last year - was the 2nd alternate to the finals then got lucky when 2 teams didn't show up. With nothing to lose, and just being happy to be playing in the finals round - we ended up winning the NASCRAG championship (quite a feat considering the great teams that competed there that haven't won in 10+ years of trying). I suspect the nothing to lose and just happy to be at the dance attitude is what made the difference for us. We intend to keep to the same attitude this year but we have a problem. We lost a member of our group and are now a person short of the six needed.

Ideally, we'd like to find someone who is outgoing, smart, a good role-player, and very good at solving puzzles to take our 6th seat at the table. By outgoing, we mean completely willing to go over the top as the situation dictates but not in a way that detracts from the game or the group. If your character sheet says your character is hugely into wrestling - going "Randy Macho Man Savage" rather than greco-roman is what we would love to see.

Although defending our title would be great - having fun there is more important. We want someone who will absolutely be able to work with us and mesh into the group.

Any True Dungeon players out there interested in being considered for our open seat? Post any questions here or message me. Thanks!

Fred

There are 2-3 different slots for the qualifying round. Last year, I think we did Thursday evening something like 7p to 11p (~4 hour slots). The other options, if memory serves, were Friday 1p-5p and, I think, one on Saturday during the day. There is also the charity tournament but I don't know when those slots are (nor when the finals is). Saturday night is the only slot I know for certain :).

I think our group would prefer the Thursday night qualifier since the Thursday events aren't as big as ones other nights. Friday night, I'm pretty sure at least half our group will be in the Kobolds Ate My Baby Midnight Massacre (yes, it is returning to GenCon for it's 25th anniversary).

The cost isn't much - something like $8-$10. It's free to do the finals if we get in.

Our plan is to talk to a number of people about that open seat and find the best fit that would be fun as a group.

I used to play in their tourneys long ago (Star/Rats era) and I loved it... made the finals several times but always with random groups as none of my group liked the tourneys. I would love to try it again with a solid group.

If it was 1st Ed D&D count me in. Otherwise... meh. I have tried so many editions of D&D and nothing ever tempts me away from 1st Ed. Although, Hackmaster is a lot of fun.

If they are still doing what they used to do, then the edition doesn't matter... they are all about puzzles and role-playing.

That sounds like something I would love. I'm all about the ROLEplaying... not the ROLLplaying.

It used to be the rule of thumb was if you ever had to roll dice, you did something wrong. That actually changed around 8 or 10 years ago. Now there's always at least one mandatory combat at some point in the adventure and usually a couple.

I've tried to put together a steady nascrag team for around 15 years now but it keeps falling apart on me one way or the other and I don't think I've managed a single year where we haven't had to at least PUG at least 1 member and up as high as 4 who've never played before. It's been a hodge podge. Some years we don't even advance, but the best we've done is 1st, 5th, 5th, and 7th.

If you are looking for a member count me in. I once played a character who did a 5 hour adventure and never rolled the dice once. That includes a combat scene. I got the local warehouse security guy (NPC) to do my fighting for me. LOL!!

I'm happy to see the level of response on this is strong with great players stepping up. More than anything, we are looking for someone who fits well into the group and can contribute in fun ways.

If any of the people who are interested are going to Origins, I was thinking of having us all jump into a game together. Whether it's D&D or not doesn't matter much since NASCRAG isn't about rules lawyering (very light on rules focus).

If anyone is going to Origins as well as GenCon and is interested, let me know and I'll see what I can coordinate. My personal email is best for this - felwred at gmail.com .
