"Friends, although I agree that defeating any great evil is an honorable cause, let us first find out all we can about this situation before we begin what will most likely be a dangerous mission. As our ranger mentioned, we don't want to just walk into a trap unaware.

Now, what do we know of the township of Barovia? Has anyone had any dealings with its burgomaster, Kolyan Indrirovich? Have any of you traveled the Svalich woods before?"

I ask these questions out loud, and my voice trails away as I begin pulling large tomes and scrolls from my pack and start pouring though them for answers.

"I'd forget all about it if I were you," interrupts the bar maid as she brings out another round of drinks, " My grandfather use to tell us stories about the cursed village of Barovia when we were little. They say the a devil lives there and no ones been in our out in nearly a century save for the gypsies that serve him."

"Well, she's right about the curse," I say as the bar maid leaves. I turn back to the book at the top of my stack and read from it out loud. "Listen to this, 'Barovia was once a small village under the dominion of one Count Strahd von Zarovich. Details of his fall are spotty at best but apparently the count died in some type of altercation with his brother, either over the fate of a blade of unrelenting power or over a maid of great beauty. In either case one thing is sure, since the Count's death a curse has hung over the dark forests of Barovia.'"

"Please allow me to peruse this document. Let me see if there are any signs of magic in it," Breon says as he takes the scroll. He bends over it, concentrating, whispering in a strange tongue as his fingers trace arcane patterns in the air over the scroll.

There is nothing even faintly magical about the paper or its message but the wax seal glows bitterly with the faintest hints of enchantment as if it had come in contact with a force of great evil very recently.

Kicking back in my chair and placing a booted foot on the edge of the table, "Well now, isn't that interesting. I did a detect evil on the man as he was leaving (a PM to our DM) but only the seal showed any sign of well, something. The man showed nothing at all."

"I'm all for checking this out even if it is another wild goose chase. Adeya, you remember that last story you told us about. There was supposed to be a fabulous shield in the possession of a beautiful Dryad. Turned out to be a trashcan lid tacked to a tree in the yard of an 80 year old great grandmother. Although it would beat sitting around here listening to my liver hiccup."

Looks up from taking notes on Breon's spell to glare at the paladin. "Look, I told you that there MIGHT be a Dryad's shield we could find. It was only a story I heard from some of the locals." Gestures towards the book. "This information on Barovia however, was compiled by a famous historian known as Picc. It's not just idle gossip."

Flashing a huge grin, "Adeya, you are as dear to me as my own sister and I will believe you and follow your stories unto the ends of the earth! Even if it is to recover a trashcan lid or a rusted butter knife."

With a more serious and worried expression, "All joking aside, what can you tell us of this blood? Human or not?"

*leaning in from the next table over*

"All of your strange words and weird finger movements won't help if this land is as dangerous as you say. If there is gold to be had, you can have my sword for an equal share of it."

The man speaking looks incredibly strong, with some kind of hide armor on. He has a scraggly beard, and long hair. And you are not sure he has ever had a bath.
