TOPIC: Iktomi’s Shaper Necklace

Iktomi’s Shaper Necklace 1 year 8 months ago #1

I was a Dm last week at gencon and I had at least two players say that Iktomi’s Shaper Necklace allows them to attack and cast a spell in the same round. I told them I do not believe this is how it works but allowed them to do it this time because I did not want to stop combat and asked them to please verify after the run. Looking through tokendb I do not see anywhere that says while wearing Iktomi’s Shaper Necklace you can attack and cast a spell as a free action. I see it says while polymorphed you may speak and cast a spell but not giving the player an extra action during combat to both attack and cast a spell. Is there another token that someone else knows about that is allowing this interaction? Just wanted to clarify so that I can make sure I know the correct way this works, thanks.

It's possible they also had a ring of quick blessing equipped

Those players are confused.

Popular things Druids can do include:
- use tokendb.com/token/charm-of-spell-storing/ to cast any spell as a free action (1/game) + use Iktomi's to polymorph attack as a standard action
- use tokendb.com/token/ring-of-quick-blessing/ to cast a 1st level spell from the class card as a free action (5/game but must actually mark the box, no substitutions) + use Iktomi's to polymorph attack as a standard action

but it's the CoSSt or RoQB in those scenarios that makes the spell a free action.

As others said it could have been the RoQB, or something simiar. I usually use RoQB and Charm of Spell Storing.

tokendb.com/token/charm-of-spell-storing/

Iktomi's desperately needs a buff to be competitive with the other class legendaries, so if TD wants to update Tokendb to give it the ability to cast free action spells I won't complain, but right now it definitely doesn't allow for it on its own.

Ya they could of been using the Ring of quick blessing and just forgot to mention it. This is why I didn't want to come down hard on the players during combat. Just wanted to clarify because it's odd that multiple players were making the same mistake.

Seconding. I believe I am one of the Druids that got asked about casting and sliding with Iktomi's, and I can confirm I was using Ring of Quick Blessing (1st level spells) and Charm of Spell Storing (once) to slide Iktomi's and free action cast a spell. I did try to have both tokens in hand when I tell a combat DM that I am doing one of those actions.

But yeah, lots going on in combat. I do know that Iktomi's doesn't let me naturally have a free action spellcast, I need something else giving me the ability to do a thing free action when I polymorph attack slide.

Also, if you were a room 6 DM, you would be in a room where I would decide to slide+free action spellcast for the extra damage. Gotta get that mad druid DPS in ;)

Just to clarify regarding RoQB - one can not use Ring of Quick Blessing to cast a spell as a free action and then use that spell as an input to Charm of Spell Swapping. That would be awesome but is not allowed (tokendb has been updated to reflect that).

Still fine using Iktomi's to slide and RoQB or Charm of Spell Storing to cast a spell (as a free action).

It could also have been cabal set (1/room), or bracelets of the zephyr or any number of other tokens that allow spells as a free action with limitiations (as a scroll, level gated, etc.)

Could not have been Cabal set. Cabal set only lets you cast 2 spells in a round (one as a standard action and one as a free action). It does not allow you to cast a spell as a free action and do something else as your standard action. Same for Bracelets of the Zephyr.

The upcoming Necklace of the Zephyr would however work, as it simply allows a spell as a free action with no modifiers.

I disagree. I find Iktomi's powerful enough. Being able to change your damage type for each room, and provide 10 DR for an elemental type is pretty powerful. I do a lot of damage as an elemental and can cast spells in elemental form providing the DR. Is it Divine Intervention, no, but still very powerful if used to full effect.

The problem with that argument is most monsters who deal an elemental type are also resistant/immune to that same type. I primarily play a polymorph druid and I don't recall once being able to take advantage of the DR from Iktomi's.

The thing is that these things you list are all at the Shaman's Greater Necklace Relic level. tokendb.com/token/shamans-greater-necklace/ All Iktomi does is let you cast spells while an elemental- so basically you get the 10 DR while casting. I think that is why there has been a general sentiment among Druid primaries that the step up to the legendary doesn't add as much as other classes legendaries do.

I know this got way off track from the original question. I'm glad this was all clarified though. The power buffing discussion is likely in other token threads.
