Does a field currently have to have corn planted to be considered a corn field? Lots of fields that are usually planted with corn don't have any this year due to the rains...

As long as the field is only used for corn, it counts as a corn field.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

You haven't been in the midwest very long so we will forgive you on this one. A cornfield can (and often does) become a soybean field and then again a cornfield...lol. Though it doesn't make your statement wrong, I would say it is incorrect in that fields used for things other than corn can be cornfields (every other year or so).

If the corn gets planted and bad weather happens early enough, farmers sometimes replant with soybeans in the same season even.

True but it is not a cornfield at that point it is a soybean field. If and when it gets replanted with corn it again becomes a cornfield.

I am familiar with crop rotation as a concept, though not with the specifics. Which is why the cornfield in questions was chosen because it is only ever used as a corn field. Why doesn't this particular farmer rotate? You'd have to ask them.

Excellent more information. The particular cornfield we need to dig in doesn't do crop rotation. That eliminates a fair number of fields. It also confirms that we are not digging in a graveyard like I did fear at one point....lol.

Unless if they plant corn (and only corn) in that graveyard.

Great fertilization I believe...

Damn you Cliff, now I have to search for graveyards that they only plant corn in.....maybe I should wait to get home before doing that google search at work.
