For the 2019 season:

Suggestion: Start the TD season at Origins and end at GameholeCon.
Reason: Both conventions do not have electronic ticketing.

Keep offering at GenCon but make it a middle of the season event.

Forget ghosting for a minute. I thought that someone with ten tickets on their account could cash them all in at once, get their wristbands and pass them out. You’re saying that this is not true? Do they have to transfer each individual ticket to different individual badges? What a cluster. I mean, that sounds suboptimal.

The way it was explained to me is we must scan in the buyer's badge AND the other player badge at the same time to properly work the system. I signed a paper saying I would abide by their rules, so I can't allow ghosts according to how it works -- unless that person has 9 other real badges.

If nothing else, can we distinguish between:

1. Gen Con policy on redeeming tickets (X different badges needed to redeem X tickets in the E-Ticketing system).

and:

2. TD Policy about leaving slots open on runs, equipping synergy tokens on open slots, awarding treasure for open slots.

?

If we have to live with #1 that is OK.

Today, 1 week after buying tickets, is not the right time to announce any changes to #2.

For my situation, I have:
  • 1 full run with only 6 confirmed players.
  • 1 run with 5 tickets and only 2 confirmed players

I hope to fill those slots with players, but if I am unable to and end up eating a $78 ticket and get no treasure that is going to be a huge bummer, as I bought those tickets under the belief that the written policy in the PHB on page 54 would be honored.

Confirmed with Derek Gruder and reply was along the lines that X badges are need to use X tickets to an event. A single badge can only be used for one ticket. This applies to Electronic Tickets.

Let the games begin now.

I would have liked to have known about this change before tickets went on sale. Ah well.
I like the change and think its a smart move. 10 is fairly reasonable number.

Good thing not to change Ghosting for gencon.

did you miss where Jeff said no ghosting at Gen Con. That is a change.

If an.yone needs to scan my badge if i am around i would be happy to let you.

Yeah I missed that.... um no ghosting at gencon sucks

Not as much as eating the cost of a $78 ticket and getting nothing for it because of a last minute no show.

Or losing out on a nightmare run because of a fill in.

How rigorous are the tests for whether a badge can be used for an event? Could a single badge be used for two different runs happening in the same slot?

If so, it seems like there's an easy hack around it. Procure 9 more badges, named True Dungeon #1-9, and whenever a player needs to ghost in that badge gets scanned.

In either case, the electronic tickets thing is a major quality-of-life drop for this con. And that's regardless of any ghosting changes present in the system.

I no longer consider GenCon the premier TD convention.

It will be another convention (GameholeCon or Origins) when ghosting may be allowed so that one can avoid these issue.

Unless there is further change, GHC is not one of those where ghosting is allowed.

But it is a 50 minute drive from my door, so it may still become my premier event. That would mean not volunteering there in the future which would make me sad.

Going to be frustration on all sides.

Where is this electronic ticketing actually described as a good thing for the player base? If we go electronic ticket i'd much rather a barcode for each ticket i have, so if i buy a run i'd get 10 barcodes.

If Gen Con wants to make sure a player is using them fine, scan 1 badge not 10. Tickets are still being used as intended.

If there are policy changes we needed to know before Origins/ Gen Con event reg. Too much money was spent based on set of expectations that things would be the same as year previous. With the expansion to other cons we as a player base have more options where to spend our TD money now.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

Is there any way to push back on Gen Con about this?

Frankly it's nuts that Gen Con is trying to change their policy around this as a side effect of going to electronic tickets, and appears to be doing so without an understanding of the impact it has on one of their premier events.

In the past when they were paper, I got X tickets with my name on them, and I was free to dispose of them how I liked.

Now with electronic tickets I am being told I need X-1 people standing around for the purpose of barcode scanning.

There is no obvious good reason for this new restriction, it's not a value add to me as a player, it doesn't seem to be a value add to you as a a GM/exhibitor, and I can't see how it's a benefit to Gen Con (unless maybe they think people are playing in events without a badge and/or scalping tickets?).

I would request that you request that Gen Con provide TD with 9 valid barcodes assigned to "flex player 1", "flex player 2", ... and so on, and allow these barcodes to be used to register players as they arrive to claim their wristbands.

I think the benefit to the con is being able to ditch the entire ticket pickup counter and corresponding volunteers.

Here's a thought, could we run photocopies of the barcodes for day shift volunteers badges and leave those scannable codes at the desk during the day since day shift volts wouldn't be using them anyway. Same at night with the night shift guys.

they could have easily created an app to download. then you could have your tickets (even in offline) in the app. this way of "electronic" tickets , is almost a step back from paper tickets
